Unhappy whimzee chews

Hi, i am right in thinking hamsters can have whimzee chews, right?

I brought all 3 of the hamsters a small toothbrush whimzee chew from a garden centre, yesterday, which had like a pick n mix section for dogs. The toothbrushes are sized for chihuahua's and jack russels. The hamsters had a different coloured one each and i gave them it yesterday afternoon about 2 o clock.

When i went at about 7 o clock to get them out their cages into their balls for a run around, i thought i would look just to see if they were taking any interest into them.

Fudge and cookie had taken a few bites and snowy....well I couldn't find it!

I thought nothing of it and got them all out apart from snowy, who didn't want to come out!

I left her and when i returned to her cage a bit later about 7... she was asleep in her tunnel. She didn't move from there before i went to bed at 11:30.

I kept having bad feelings of her eating the whole thing and now having really bad stomach and it making her really ill. Im by her cage right now and she is sleeping in her tunnel like normal. She seems okay but the questions are...

Could this make her ill?

Is it possible for her to have eaten the whole thing?

Or is she likely to have hidden it really well?

Maybe Snowy just hid hers - dragged it into her nest? That's what my girl always does with her chews!

She stores everything in her tunnel and i can't find it ive searched around her cage too and cant see it anywhere! It was just weird how she wouldn't come out of her cage last night at all.

Keep watch of her as I don't want to scare you but I gave the euro star shaped whimzees to 3 of my 8 week old pups and 2 of them died cause they chewed the whimzee far to fast and the bits clogged their intestines. The euro stars are made a bit different to the Crocodiles and the tooth brushes, being much harder substance which usually makes hammy really have to gnaw hard to chew the whimzee up quickly.

If Snowy doesn't return to her normal self soon a trip to the vet is needed As Soon As Possible to help her pass out the bigger bits of whimzee which may be stuck in her digestive tract.

Thankyou for the reply! Thats a terrible thing to happen I've come to a decision that im not going to give snowy one again jusy give her normal treats (milk drops etc). I think this will be the best thing to do. My other 2 have still got theirs! They've eaten about half maybe even just a quarter! snowy is back to normal and it seems that it just lasted the night she had it for

What size are these chews candice? I`ve had one of the antos crocodile chews given as a gift and I binned it because I don`t feed things made for dogs to a hamster.

Search every bit of the cage, bed and under all the substrate. If it`s not in the cage, then chances are she`s eaten it. keep an eye on her and restrict her diet for a few days and make sure she`s drinking. To consume this chew, she would still have to nibble it into small pieces or pouch it. So watch her to see if she`s pouched any and keep checking around the cage as she may stash it later if it`s inside her pouches. x

There really small, there made for chihuahua's and jack russels. We brought the smallest ones there after reading up them being allowed them. Ive searched what i can see of her cage, however she needs cleaning out tonight, so I might find it then! My other 2 have still got at least half of theirs left.she seems fine now it was just very worrying the first night as she slept in her tunnel and barely woke up, she refused to come out into the exercise ball-which she loves! So glad shes back to normal now though .

No harm done then, that`s good. Crushed nuts are a nice treat for hamsters and they are more natural. Mix them with a few de husked sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and offer them in small broken up pieces. x
