You could always write them a letter. Not an angry letter as this kind of letter tends to be ignored, but you could put in the letter what you would like them to change and why. I wrote to Savic recently asking them to make a 100cm hamster cage with a big front door and a deeper base. Well I emailed them. They did reply at some length and although they say it is not cost effective to make a deeper base (due to new machinery needed) they did say they might be looking at a bigger version of the Hamster Heaven.

I like some of the hamster toys from there but the information they give out is so wrong! I adopted my robo's from there and they convinced me to get the combi 1. They were in it for a day. 1 day. Until I could get a nice big bin cage and finally they are now in the detolf. Plus p@h do sell fluffy bedding there and tbh I would expect more from such a large chain shop!!?

I would like to see more independent high street pet shops selling only `ethical` small pet products and only sell cages and beddings that were suitable to keep an animal in/on rather than stock things that are obviously there to make quick money at the expense of the pet.

Cages: Narrow barred cages 75cm long or bigger. Zoozone & Ferplast Maxi tanks.

Substrates: Fitch, Aubiose/hemp, Supreme Cosi n Dry, chopped card beddings and wood shavings that have been thoroughly kiln dried and properly tested for dust extraction. Or don`t sell wood shavings at all and only support paper and wood pulp/cardboard only beddings.

Food: Burgess Supahamster/dwarf mix and some of the mixes we see online that far outweigh the cheap supermarket brands.

Nesting: ONLY paper based and have leaflets comparing good with bad for people to see what they are buying explaining the differences.

I`m sure there would be a market for this even though large retailers suck up the main market, probably because anyone with a car can park at their door and walk in. But when you compare much of the stock to what a smaller pet shop might be able to order in for you, it`s a no brainer.

My local pet shop doesn`t sell animals (a big plus for me) and they always manage to get me anything I ask them for, which saves me some money too as I usually buy things online that I can`t buy on the high street. So have a chat with your smaller pet shops and if they stock animals for sale, educate them on their ethics while in there! x

They don't really seem to know the basics, when I went for my assesment they were talking about how each memeber of staff recives training in all animals, rodents, reptiles, fish, dogs ect.. But they cant manage the simple stuff like sexing and nutrition!

I would bet most of the members on here and the mouse forum I`m a member of know more about mice and hamsters than any staff member in a pet shop. Chances are they are trained in the basics and what the store sells and that is passed on to the customer. It can take many years of keeping small animals to gain that knowledge, I appreciate that. But the hours I`ve spent researching mouse illness and husbandry I could probably write a small book about. So I wouldn`t expect anyone working in a pet shop to know more than they are advised unless they already know more from having researched a lot themselves.

I wouldn`t house mice on wood shavings for example, although some people do and have no problems, or at least they don`t think they do. It`s just as well the large store doesn`t sell pet mice because they only alternative bedding they have is Carefresh as far as I know and that`s just as bad. x

Pets at Home are a retail business, not a pet business. Our beneficial advice goes under the carpet which is pretty sad. They even have the nerve to band some of us from their stores for correcting them and providing education including Jollyes! I have seen and continue to see many things that are wrong in both stores hence why I avoid the 'live animal' section because it gets me so worked up.

I did write them a letter, I know someone who works in the Pet Industry. They then sent the letter to the head vet of Pets at Home and they are now stopping selling cotton bedding (if they say what they did in the letter) figures crossed

That would be a result IF they act on their promise. All pet stores should only be selling paper based beddings. Good work though. x
