What wheel
Hi so for my new Syrain I was wondering whether to get the saucer style wheel or normal vertical design. In the past I have used only the comfort wheel and silent spinner but came across the saucer wheel (or whatever it's called) an was like hey why not. I was just scanning through hamster related stuff and found a section stating that some hamsters find it hard to learn how to use the saucer wheel and a bit saying some never learn how to use it. Just wondering on onions of what to get.

Re: What wheel
Hi hammy. I prefer upright wheels myself. A Syrian needs a big wheel so your looking at something over 9" inches across. If you look in the Housing section, Serendipity has some great posts regarding wheels, their usability and cost. x

Re: What wheel
I just replied to your post Hammy. RH is right - a stand-up wheel is better than a flying saucer for their main cage wheel, they run better in them and they need to run with a straight back, so the wheel needs to be big enough so they can run so their back and head are in a straight line when running. I put links to the wheel options in my message. I didn't mention the Silent Spinner in my message, but I ordered one to try and didn't like it - for a start off the 12" is REALLY big, and also it just didn't spin properly - there seems to have been a manufacturing change with those recently that has caused some issues. It can be nice to having a flying saucer as a play toy for out of the cage (assuming you don't have space for both in the cage - most people don't have enough space for both). But their wheel, their nest and their house are their number one priorities in life - oh yes and their hoards!

Re: What wheel
Fluffy hates his flying saucer! Makes him look sea sick! I like the 12" silent spinner, although I still haven't worked out how to attach it to the bars, lol. It does still make a noise but it doesn't make you want to get out the WD40 or anything

Re: What wheel
I have both a 12" wheel and a 12" flying saucer in my hamsters cage. I always thought I'd let my hamster pick out which one he would like more. Turns out, he uses them both.............alot. So, they're both staying if it makes hm happy.
