Question How long can I leave my hamster alone?

I'm going up into the mountains for 3 days and I was wondering if it'd be ok to leave my syrian hamster alone for that time.

He has 2 water bottles (one on the upper level and lower) and he doesn't drink all that much. He also hoards a lot of food in his hideout. Would it be wise to clean the cage before I leave or is that too much stress on him? Also, it'd be great if someone could give me some tips like how much food I should leave behind etc. if I go though with this.

Im sure there is someone more experienced who can offer some insight but for what it's worth, I've left my previous hamster for 3-4 days with a freshly cleaned cage, full water bottle and food dish. I also scattered food in his bedding so he could forage for it whenever he felt like it. He seemed to do fine!

That's good to hear! I was really worried and at first, I thought I would never leave him alone. Nobody can watch him though, so it's a big possibility he's going to end up staying here alone Scattering around some food is a good idea!

you can also try leaving some millet sticks or diy toys to keep him busy while you're gone. My syrian will definitely try to escape his cage if left alone for too long since he's used to going out every night. I also set up a mini cctv when I left them for a couple of days. It allowed me to check on them thru my mobile.

I've left Nelly for 2 days before and she has been fine. I make loads of cardboard toys with the food inside and scatter the rest in her bedding so she has to look for it. I usually put in a new chew bar aswell as that will keep her occupied for a couple of hours every day! Also millet, as mentioned above.

Depends what your usual cage cleaning routine is like? I find I only really have to do a litter tray and then every couple of weeks I go poo picking for strays (lovely!) so I would just change the litter tray before going and leave the rest.

Is there anyone who can pop their head in and just check he has water? 3 days is stretching it in my opinion. He won't mind not having a cage clean and so long as you give him his 3 days worth of food before you go that will be okay but there is always a chance that they will knock their water bottle off the cage, it can leak or break and they will be without water. DEFINITELY give him a spare full water bottle at the very least and maybe ask a mate to just spare 5 minutes to check on him? They could get themselves stuck somewhere or get out and Sod's law, if it's going to happen at all it's going to happen when you're not there.

We ended up staying for 5 days and a friend went in to check on him. When we returned I found him under his wheel but he burrowed out. He turned it into a hideout, haha!

If anyone is thinking about doing this, definitely wouldn't recommend rearranging the cage. Ollie didn't like the placement of his wheel and kept knocking it over (hasn't happened since moved to the other side). I'm lucky he's a bigger hamster, or else he might not have been strong enough to push out of it.

As for food and water, I think he would have been fine without a checkup visit . My friend assured me he had more than enough food, but refilled it just in case. Don't believe she changed water though. I have 2 water bottles and ones pretty huge and the other is the "stater" size. The big one had been used halfway, and the top barely.
