I have a medium sized Syrian hamster called Max who loves to bar chew. I either place him into his play/burrow box or his ball whenever he bar chews with the intention to take his mind off his favorite activity while giving him something more fun to do.
I have tried to prevent this unwanted behavior with techniques mentioned in the 'how to manage bar chewers' thread (whatever it is called) on this website. I would like to know your thoughts on whether or not you agree with what I am doing or if there is anything else I should be doing but haven't quite realised.
Hi zononbo and welcome to HC! What size cage is your hamster in and how deep is his substrate/what kind? Does he have toys in his cage and if so, how many and what kind? Sometimes bar chewing is an attention-getting behaviour and he's been rewarded with out-of-cage time for his efforts. He may have come to associate play-time as a reward for this behaviour.
