Default Hamsters in pairs?

So I was wondering today, what other species can live together other than roborovskis? I've never known! I used to think it was only robos but I've heard there are more??

Campbells Russian Dwarf, Winter Whites and the hybrid dwarves can all live together, they have a tendency to fall out with one another so may need to be in their own cages eventually. All my hybrids live in their own cages as they were on their own when we got them, except Cindy did used to have a sister she lived with but sadly the sister who was called Sandy passed away at 12 weeks of age.

Keeping a pair together (siblings) usually end in separations, so although taking a pair on is up to the individual, it`s wise to have a long term strategy and be prepared to have two cages.

All of the dwarf hamster species can be kept in same-gender pairs except Chinese. x

Any of the Russians can be kept in same sex sibling pairs but other than robos that's it, the other species, Chinese or Syrian need to be solitary.
It does seem more common for pairs to fall out eventually & need to be separated so you always need to be prepared for that.

I would advise against keeping pairs of hamsters. They will need separating at some point and I am now of the belief that all hamsters are practically solitary.

I've had two pairs of Russians before, both of which came as related siblings to my rescue. One pair was re-homed and lived happily until passing naturally, the other, more recently, the same story.

I actually find it stressful keeping pairs, as there is always the chance they will fall out, more so with Russians. Some shops sell Chinese hamsters in pairs too but they should live alone.
