Unhappy THIS is why I rescue...*possibly upsetting*

This morning I was contacted by a housing group. Due to owner's eviction she abandoned 7 pets, which were a rabbit, 3 cats and 3 hamsters, all needing to be re-homed. I wasn't sure about taking the hamsters on as I was not prepared to take more so soon, but it seemed like an urgent situation, and I'm glad I got them.

It is obvious that they were not well cared for. I believe they were not fed well although the hamsters are quite large, but it may be due to lack of exercise. The smell of ammonia is incredibly over-powering and the hamsters are not only in their own poo, but their own wee too. I don't know how long they were left like this but it's been a while for definite.

Golden banded is a male, then there are two females, one BEC, one cinnamon.

The cages are tiny and in a state, as can be seen been below. Of course I will be moving them into larger cages and dividing toys between them.

Aw poor little things. They kind of look sad and lost as well. I'm glad you rescued them. Hardly any bedding and all that poo, and grungy - it's amazing they're alive really. All their ears are down . Off topic a bit, those cages are quite unusual - haven't seen anything like that before with a kind of top box thing that says 'Rosewood' on it.

It'll be lovely to see pictures of them when you've got them into better cages. I'm sure they will blossom. They look beautiful and in need of some love, tlc and looking after.

That type of thing just makes me so incredibly angry and sad at the same time. I don't know how people can think nothing of treating them with such cruelty. At least they're with you now. Let us know how the poor little guys get on

Oh my gosh, I don't think I've seen anything like it.....poor little ones. So so sad....why people get pets if they are not prepared to look after and care for them is really beyond me.

So glad you now have them, I know you weren't going to take anymore in after recent events but so glad you seen this as an urgent situation, well done to you again. They will def be in good caring hands now. x

This makes me so sad too, who knows why people get pets they can't care for, most likely just plain ignorance rather than any intent to be cruel but I hate to see any animal suffer like that, so glad they found their way to you now, I hope they'll be ok with the really good care they'll now be getting.

A hamster`s worst nightmare, but it`s rescues like yours SinNyx that make the difference and the light at the end of this tunnel is that you have given these little ones safety and love and a decent meal. No doubt they will find loving homes soon too. Those cages are abominable. How can any small animal even express natural behaviour in such cramped areas?

Please do update on them soon. x

I think all we can assume is that the owner couldn't cope, either financially or emotionally or something else, but yes it was irresponsible having three. It's certainly neglect, but if they were evicted we can't judge without knowing the circumstances. But yes some people are just ignorant. I'm just glad they found their way to you too.

Totally agree Serendipity. Eviction is terrible for anyone, but sometimes it`s a good idea to think ahead. Keeping a dog or a cat for example is a very long term commitment, but having three hamsters still means two years plus sometimes, so the people owning them may or may not have seen this coming. Tragic for both them and their pets though, very sad. can`t imagine what people go through a times like this. If I had to give up my Chubs, I would rather tent up in the hills than give him up! x

I commented on this on Facebook too! So sad, blue cage is what Boris was in when I got him - hideous! Poor souls.

Such innocent, gorgeous faces staring up at you with sadness. I am sure you'll give these little ones a fantastic new start to life, and hopefully they will find some forever homes.
