Re: Should I rescue these guys?
It's lovely that these two will be having a new life with you! Hope all goes well with them, it does sound like they wouldn't have stood much of chance without you xxx

Re: Should I rescue these guys?
Bit of a stupid question, when I get them I'm going to attempt to check for gender. If they are both the same, male and male or female and female, is it possible to keep them in the same cage? I've read that dwarf hamsters are good in the same habitat together as long as they are of the same species. However "good together" could mean many things.

I wouldn't keep them together because there is a possibility that they will not live together peacefully. The only ways that I have found success with housing dwarf hamsters together are: if they are the same species, same gender and siblings, or mother/daughter or father/son. I wouldn't risk it.
I'm sorry for your loss of your hamster and I am glad that you are adopting these little guys. I love when hamsters get a second chance at a great life! Good luck!!!

Re: Should I rescue these guys?
I don`t see why not if they are getting along and they are not too stressed by being moved. Keep things minimal and even transport them IN this cage, which will prevent them from feeling stressed. Placing the cage inside a box or cover it with a small blanket could also help. Not totally necessary, but something t try if you feel the need.
I`m sure your heart was steering in their direction and these things happen for a reason. Good luck and remind the morons not to get more animals!

Oh trust me, once I have the two hammies in my possession I will have a few choice words for these "people", if you can even call them that.

You`ve a good heart RedBzu. In time, you will know that. Giving any animal a `safe haven` away from uncertainty is to be applauded and we are all here to help and support you so don`t worry. They will be a breeze, wait and see. x

A huge well done for saving these two. I'd love to see some pics once they're settled in their new clean, safe homes.

Re: Should I rescue these guys?
Alright I have them here after a little bit of a struggle to get them from the old cage to the new habitat (put treats in a cup)
The people left them in their cage on the front lawn.
How do I tell their sex? They won't let me pick them up and I am worried about scaring them. Can I put them in something that is clear and just tell or do I need to move their bellys to see?

Re: Should I rescue these guys?
What a lovely thing to do and how mean of their previous owners to leave them on the front lawn! My local Facebook selling page had a wee winter white female named Olaf for sale. If only I had the room for another cage!
Males have bigger behinds. Not sure how noticiable that would be on wee ham, compared to a Syrian!

Re: Should I rescue these guys?
I'd let them walk into a clear and empty glass jar, it should let you have a good look underneath without distressing them too much.
If they are the same gender I'd let them stay together and just watch out for signs of trouble. If you do let them stay together there're a few basic steps you can take to reduce the risk of fights, these include no shelves or platforms in the cage, no modules in the cage, two of pretty much everything (wheels, houses e.t.c) and making sure any houses e.t.c have two entrances and exits so that neither ham can get trapped in somewhere (its also important to make sure the cage layout allows for them to get around/behind things and theres not anywhere they can easily trap each other)
