The actual issue is not the price of the ferry, but petrol and that I and anyone else who would be able to take a week of to drive there and back do not own a car. It's the car hire that makes quite a big difference.

Yes I can see that. I was wondering if you needed a car in Germany . . . . but I'm sure you looked into that.

Have a look at this Peanut - I checked out the Norfolk ferries timetable - it looks excellent and the prices for a car, two people and two pets range between £39 and £85 depending what time you travel and whether you choose flexi or economy tickets. You could do the whole trip in a day. There's an additional £15 for each pet and they have to stay in the car again, but it's a daytime trip so they should sleep mostly.

If you set off from Newcastle early in the morning, you could be in Norfolk in time to catch a ferry around 2 or 3pm leaving plenty of time for the journey and allowing for delays. It's a short crossing. Presumably you'd need to take your car with you anyway. Yes it may cost about £300 to £400 in total with petrol. Unless you were relying on someone else's car maybe and don't have a car?

I think it sounds like the best route for a one day journey leaving early in the morning and a short ferry route - the ferry journey could be nice and relaxing too.

But if the car option isn't on then it looks like you are stuck risking them in the hold of an aeroplane or rehoming them. Difficult decisions, but I think rehoming sounds the less stressful of the two.

Peanut - we'd love to find a solution to help you. You have many minds working on this.

We know that Eurostar is out of the question but what about ordinary trains once across the channel? If you could get someone to assist you in getting across the channel with a car, and ferry of course! Not sure where abouts in Germany that you are heading but the trains on the continent are very good and don't forget that fuel, if considering driving is cheaper, certainly in France and Belgium. I can't narrow it down more for you as I don't know where you're heading.

I looked up Netherlands trains but couldn't find their pet policy - but they do have one. That sounds like a good idea of Artisans. Except I guess you'd be a foot passenger on the ferry so then couldn't take pets because they have to be left in a car! What a pain. I'd drive you there just for the hell of it but I can't drive our car right now as have a bad left foot! It'd be quite an adventure. I've driven round France and Spain before. It does seem like the cost and logistics are making it impossible unless you can find someone with a car who fancies a trip abroad and is willing to share some of the cost. Do you have a boyfriend? If not maybe you should nab one quick with a car!

Serendipity, you are so funny! That's a great idea, even though I think the fact that it will be a long distance relationship pretty soon might be a bit off putting. A friend of mine suggested to get a drug dealer or exotic animal smuggler to help (not that I know any).
But thank you guys for all your help I really appreciate all your suggestions.

Yes that's a point - it would be a long distance relationship and maybe not enough time to get that sorted anyway lol. I would definitely email everyone you know though and ask if anyone fancies a drive to Germany to help you move your hamsters - someone out there might just say yes.

Hi guys I really need help. I've searched and browsed, send emails and I still don't know. I will be moving to Switzerland from Eu Country and I want to take my hamster with me. Do I need to take it to the vet for a checkup before I go? She is really shy towards strangers and our vets are more dog&cat kind of people. I don't want to expose her to extra stress with a check up if it is not mandatory.

There will also be a 8 hour car drive, is there any way to make it easier for my hamster?

An 8 hour car drive is quite a long time, although hamsters can handle it. You'd need a carrier of at least 40x20cm as they most likely won't sleep for the whole time - it would need a good amount of food and water (bring extra cucumber for water!), a hideaway, something to chew on and some enrichment like cardboard tubes.

Hope you have a safe journey
