Default Alaska for Syrian ham

Hi,just wanted to ask anyone with Alaska,do you think it is ok for Syrian ham (male) if I connect it to his three level cage dimensions 39cmx29cmx53cm ( I think - I am not at home and don't know exactly the measurements). There are three levels and height is 53 cm. I know it's small, but would it be ok with Alaska attached? It's for my Syrian Percy. Trying to upgrade...

Actually the measurements of other cage are slightly bigger at 48x30x50 . I was thinking doing this long time ago but never got to it as Percy is really lazy boy and he always seems so content. He also gets time out of his cage and plenty of attention.

Hi Katmick, I have an Alaskan cage for my Syrian Willow and it's perfect. I didnt bother with the shelf and the small plastic hut that came with it I tailormade it to suit Willow. In my opinion you can't go wrong it's makes a great home for hamsters, it's easy to clean and a good size. I got mine from Zooplus but the only draw back was the delivery, it comes from Germany so may take a little longer.

Good luck I hope this helps

J xxxx

I have two alaskas and they are great. In my experience, hamsters are better in cages with flat out floorspace than over three levels.

Thanks for your replies.Yeah,I agree that large flat space is the best, however I feel Percy really loves his cage.He is flying up and down the tubes and has made a large house underneath his shelf. He loves to burrow and he has plenty of CoziNDry substrate.I hate just taking him from the environment he is comfortable in,so I decided to extend into Alaska. It seems like a great cage,I love the idea of large access on front.I have Alexander also, which is huge but side doors are small, and that's why I think I prefer Alaska.I spent a lot of time every day with my hams so access is important.Thank you,I was not sure whether the cage was ok,I know people are using them also on dwarfs, but I guess it's a great cage for both hams indeed.

Well as long as you have the one main cage that gives him the floor space he needs, which you would get with adding the Alaska, absolutely nothing wrong with having his current setup attached to it in my opinion. In fact I would say that's the best of both worlds and gives him the benefit of plenty extra running around room which is always a good thing. He's a Syrian and they're good climbers so I'm sure he'll enjoy still having access to the other cages. Just keep in mind that when he's older and not as spry you may have to remove them and stick with just the Alaska or set them up so that they sit side by side instead. Show us a picture when you're done with his new setup - I'm always a sucker for looking at other people's cages

Hi Ruby DG,I was actually thinking to connect two cages side by side,so it would be easy accessible from floor level. I want him to feel like he has some kind of extension to his burrow
I can't wait for all the DIY,I never connected cages before ,so need to do lots of research.
I will be also getting IKEA Detolf for my two WW dwarfs Penelope and Florie, which I will need separate in the middle + create a safe lid on top.
Also Hetty needs more changes in her Alexander,so I have plenty of accessorizing and changes for my hams ahead of me. It's so exciting though!
Creating amazing habitats for my hams is all I can think of lately!
