It really depends on what you want from your ham, both are very active little hams & a lot of fun to watch, a robo can often remain just that, a ham to watch rather than handle, Chinese are usually very timid to begin with & can take a lot of patience with taming but with time & gentle encouragement will get used to being handled.

Roborovskis can be tamed too. It takes longer, though.

Chinese hamsters are shy, but very mouse-like and they need understanding owners, but once they settle in, they make fantastic pets.

Roborovski are fast and I love their hands-off characters, so if you are not fussed about picking up/handling or even having a bit of a mad cap hamster, then a robo is the one! I`ve kept both and love them both equally. I now have a Russian hybrid for the first time in ages and he`s very different from my last robo!

I wouldn`t rush into things. I would look at your cage, your time, your views on what you want from the hamster and do lots of reading and then more reading! x

Handling a robo can be hit or miss, mostly miss! So do be prepared to allow the robo to get on with things if he/she doesn`t respond to handling. The main thing is that the handing is always done when the robo is (a) fully awake and running about and (b) never disturbed for play sessions as this will just turn negative.

They do come up second hand sometimes so check websites like Gumtree, eBay and others. You could say that the Ikea Detolf is more than a hamster tank, but a piece of contemporary furniture. You wouldn`t need a lid on it unless you had accessories in it that the hamster could easily reach the edge, or you had other pets in the house like cats/dogs etc...
