Yes they can get demodex mites and usually they have stress which allows the ever present mites to multiply so much the Hamster can nolonger stop them from doing harm. Even we humans have these mites on our skin but without stress our bodies keep them under control and they do no harm what so ever.

However any kind of stress causes them to start reproducing in large quantities and then they cause irritation and rashes which itch and cause the host animal or person to scratch which often leads to and open sore which then gets infected and needs treatment. In Dogs demodex is inherited and dogs who have outbreaks are removed from breeding plans as is the whole line they came from. With Hamsters you can treat with medications from the vets and with a little work to eliminate as much stress as is possible can keep the mites at a low amount where hammys natural immune system prevents the mites from over populating, and causing problems.

House in a quite room with little amount of people coming in and out. Feed at night times when Hamster has awaken. Offer several hiding places if hamster is new to you and untamed. Try to limit new foods and water.

Stressed hamsters often are restless and sleep in strange places. When you approach their cage they often will bolt about the cage and screech at you. Some will even hyper ventilate and breath very quickly. Often their eyes are wide open but they don't look at you. Really scared stressed hamsters will rear up on hind legs with teeth chattering and exposed in a very threatening pose.

If your hamster does any of the above you need to go back to the start with introducing yourself. Cover the cage if there is no way to place it in a darkened room to allow the hamster to calm down. Offer the hamster some tissue which you kept on your person to collect your natural human smells so the hamster can become used to you and what you smell like so it won't be so frightened of you so will not stress out as much.

Most of all be calm and patient with your hamster so you can both learn to love and trust each other.
