Unhappy Having a down moment over my hamster..

Pikachu went in his ball for the first time today, he loved it! He was running about, sniffing and came up to me many times. I was picking him up in it and it was wonderful. I was so happy I got so close to holding him, after him letting me stroke him for the first time last night! He didn't seem upset by it at all.

When he climbed back in to his cage, I hand fed him a piece of nut. After he finished I talked to him, let him sniff me, then stroked him slowly again. He let me do it for a bit, then turnt round suddenly. I don't think he wanted to bite me.. But I couldn't help but flinch in case he did.. I ended up smacking my hand on the cage and making a big noise which scared him.. I feel like I've ruined all the progress we have made together in that small and quick moment. He's being very shy now.. I spoke to him and said sorry and now I'm downstairs.. I thought it would be best to let him calm down a bit? Forget what happened? I don't know.

I feel like the worst person ever, I fed him some lettuce before coming downstairs and he took it out my hand, I had my hand laying flat with it in my palm (I haven't done this yet!). Thought I would try it and see what he does? He didn't walk on my hand, but he got close. I guess this means he doesn't hate me? Haha.

Please tell me your taming problem stories, I would like to read some things that make me feel better about tonight.. Like how your hamsters started and how confident they are now?

I know it has only been a week since I got him, and he's my first hamster... But I just really really want him to like me..

Edit:
I'm feeling much better now, I think I just needed some reassurance from fellow hamster mums and dads.. Everyone is so lovely here! Thank you, please keep telling me your taming stories. It is great to read them! Thank you those who have taken the time to help me! It nice to hear that hamsters are forgiving.. The weird thing is Pikachu bit me the second day I had him and I didn't flinch at all. I calmly went and cleaned it and put a plaster over it. He didn't mean to do it, I was holding a treat and it was only his second day with me so he didn't know what my finger was I guess!

Also I regret choosing 'LadyPikachu' as my name I wish I could change it, I can see it is confusing people... As Pikachu is a boy :')

I think you are doing really well for a week

Freya still doesn't walk on our hands and we've had her since February. I think she's always going to be a ball ham. She'll walk into it and let me carry her in that safely.

If she has bitten you now you're had feeding treats I think you're safe. Freya has never bitten me, she's licked and nibbled, the trick is to wash your hands so you don't smell tasty!

She'll forgive you for the noise. She may not have even been bothered by it.

I wouldn't dwell on it too much if I were you, I know that's easier said than done. I got my first hamster 3 weeks ago and she had been doing really well with being handled but she did bite me yesterday out of nowhere. I'm wondering if I hadn't washed my hands well enough and she'd smelt KFC on my finger lol.

You will have set backs every now and then but try not to lose your confidence too much as hamsters can pick up on that.

please don't feel to bad, these things happen and hamsters soon forget and cant resist their favourite treat, Its so early days just yet and with him being your first you are doing really well, I have owned a few hamsters in the past and if I think im going to get bitten i still jump its normal, (it hurts) but in time you learn to read the hamster more and you both get used to each other, I have been bitten more times than I care to remember, I once had a hamster bite on to my finger because i was in her cage and wouldn't let go, as I pulled my hand away she kept a hold and ended up coming out of her cage attached to my finger and landing on the floor, (she wasn't hurt) but in time she became very tame and we moved on as you will,

You're not alone here, going back to my hamster taz (about 5 years ago now) I took him out of the cage in his ball and tried tipping him on to my hand but flinched because I thought he was going to bite me and he fell on to the floor squeaked and he ran under the bed, I managed to get him back in to his cage but was scared I had scared him off me, the next day he didn't remember a thing and came to me for treats.

First week, I wouldn't rush so much ? She's coming along fine....and any noises can make them, or us jump. It happens. The ham prolly forgot it already.

I disturbed Ziggy today when I came home, since he's spending a lot of time chilling in his little pod at the top of the cage , stuffed with tissue. It's winter. I held out a tiny piece of a seed treat. As in tiny. And as he does every once in a while? He just grabbed it with his teeth, really really fast, so I felt the brush of teeth on my finger. Then he slunk back under the tissues, lol.....with the seed.

I could either obsess about after all this time he nearly BIT me? Or I could find it kinda amazing that he has the senses and coordination to rip something out of my hand without biting. No one can be cuddly and squeaky happy all the time, hehe. I choose to be amazed that he was able to take the food, however 'roughly' and abruptly, without being clumsy and mean spirited and taking my finger too...

We can't control their every move, their every reaction, they're every fright or stumble. We control our reaction to it. Not the flinching part, flinching is reflex. Our obsessing over it as if we know what they think or don't think, or know how they interpret our behavior.

I think I can probably remember every awkward moment with the hams. I'm sure they don't even recall if there were any awkward moments. Oh to be an animal. Humans unfortunately, spend too much time in the past and too little in each moment that presents itself.....

Lady P, we both got our hamsters on the same day and we're about the same in term of taming our first hamsters but believe me when I say tomorrow Pikachu will be all over you. He'll have more confidence and so will you. It's such a big step getting them out for the first time and having them on you. You're both doing so well.

CPalmer:

Thank you, little Pika is a boy though aha! I can see my Username was a silly choice really I wish I could change it haha!

They really do love food don't they!

essexgirl240:

Ah, an Essex Girl like me! Hello! The bites are horrible, he bit me by accident the second day I had him when I was giving him a treat.. I won't ever forget that pain.. it wouldn't stop bleeding! I know he didn't do it on purpose though, and I'm sure neither did yours!

POLAR WHITES:

Thank you so much, it's very reassuring to hear people who have been hamster owners for years tell me that I'm doing well! It really means a lot to me!

I'm quite a jumpy person, so sometimes if Pikachu jumps for no reason I jump then he jumps because I jumped.. it's quite comical really!

Oh gosh that sounds awful! I would be in tears! Although saying that when Pikachu bit me accidentally.. I calmly moved my hand away and went and cleaned it and tried to stop it from bleeding. I was quite proud at how I managed not to cry. It's so painful!

gellerbing:

Your story is the main one that made me feel better, I had no idea hammys could be so forgiving! Thank you for sharing, and I'm glad everything turnt out okay for you!

Skeever:

I really enjoy reading your replies, you word them so beautifully! I do need to calm down with how emotional I've been through this process so far that's for sure! I think you're probably right that they don't remember many of the bad times if any.. my dog is called Ziggy funnily enough and he's forgiven me so many times!

It's very true that we, and certainly I as a human, dwell too much on the past.. I think that's something I do need to work on!

DennisTheHamster:

Thank you, I hope you're right! I've been up to the cage since and spoken to him softly giving him a mini hamster version of apple strudel.. and he didn't look too upset so I feel much better now!

It's nice to be reading your threads and such, seeing how Dennis and Pikachu are both developing at pets! I'm glad someone became a first time hamster owner on here the same time as me as I have someone I can really relate too!

Don't be so hard on yourself!
It's only been a week. I and others on this site will agree that you're doing a great job.
He's probably still adjusting so just give him time and real soon you'll both have that connection/bond.

Im on the third week of taming my sweet little syrian and the first two weeks i did have regrets about picking her because she was sooo terrified of me and i felt like she'd never tame. She literally sprinted across the cage, did a backflip just two days ago because i accidently scared her. Now, right after a taming session when she's fully alert and she wants out of the cage, she runs over to my hand for a ride. But for some odd reason she's still super skittish if i put my hand in before she's had a taming sesh. As of right now, she's sleeping inbetween my legs :'))) (first time ever!!!!!)
Moral of the story: Don't give up!! you'll get there
