Default new hamster Elsa

I went to the green store today and just had to look at the hamsters, they must of just had a shipment because the had loads all different colours, dominate spots and banded, then there was the adoption side and there was this one little golden girl hamster awake and clearly bored out of her mind trying to chew the glass sliders and climbing on her water bottle, She is perfect but tiny,
I asked about her as she caught my eye and I was told she is a biter and had been returned to the store, but the shop assistant wasn't willing to take her out or let me, but I couldn't leave my perfect girl there to go out of her mind in a small glass box, she was coming home with me, I went around the shop buying new toys, water bottle, chews, bedding decided to go with carefresh until I get some megazorb, sand and harry hamster food as I already have sunflower seeds, dried meal worms and treats,
The shop assistant put her into the green box which she ate her way out off also most straight away, so I asked for some more so I could transfer her,
So now she is in a zoozone, playing on her large flying saucer which she is lost on, She went daft when I first put her in didn't know what to do first, made her way to her food bowl and ate the dried mealworms, dug in her sand pit which I was a little worried about as she was sticking her head under the sand, has made her self comfortable in the corner even though she has a new bed,
I have had a quick hold of her and she isn't a biter she would rather jump away then bite, she is frightened of being held and displays her fear, but she will let me stroke her when she is in her cage with no problems, isn't a screamer and a nipper, it will just take time to get her tame,
My daughter chose her name after Princess Elsa in Frozen, I will post pictures tomorrow when she settles a bit as I have turned the lights off for her now to let her relax and get to know where she is,

Congrats, looking forward to pics of the misunderstood miss...

Question for breeders: Last time I saw a new 'batch' of hamsters in one cage, probably around the four to six week old mark, there were the obvious variations on long haired Syrians....and ONE short hair mink or sable? He/She looked out of place, and the coloring looked beautifully rare! Is a short hair anomaly like that possible, since I don't think the shop knows anything about hamsters and just gets in a litter? I was so tempted to rescue the short hair sable looking one....before the other hairy critters made fun of him.

I wish pet shops would make it easier for experienced ham owners, by having an adoption bin of 'biters' .... sigh....Then we can go right to the spunky ones ! hehe......often most in need of a decent home....

Examples of Simple Inheritance

First Cross

If a pure breeding Cinnamon male is mated to pure breeding Golden female, the resulting pups are all golden. Why is this?

The Cinnamon allele, (p), is recessive to its wild type counterpart, (P). Since both animals are pure breeding, (homozygous), each has two copies of one allele at the Cinnamon locus. The Cinnamon hamster will have two Cinnamon alleles, listed as pp. The Golden hamster will have two wild type alleles, (PP).

When the Golden female makes eggs she will "send" one chromosome of each pair to each egg. Since she has the allele E at both of her Cinnamon loci, all of her eggs will receive a chromosome with the allele P on it. By a similar deduction, all the Cinnamon male's sperm cells will contain only the allele p. When these gametes fuse to form an embryo hamster the genetic makeup that it will inherit is Pp.

p from sperm p from sperm
P from egg Pp Pp
P from egg Pp Pp

The wild type allele, (P),is dominant, so this is what is shown in the youngsters' appearance. This generation from the first crossing are called the First Filial generation, (F1). It is important to note that the young F1 hamsters, although they resemble their mother, are not homozygous, (pure breeding), like her. They have two different alleles at their cinnamon locus. They are described as heterozygous, although breeders would tend to describe them more simply as "carrying Cinnamon", or "being split for Cinnamon". Although it cannot be seen, the Cinnamon allele, (p), is in the makeup of these hamsters, inherited from their father.

Let us imagine that from the litter of young hamsters, a male and a female are kept and bred from.

also there can be long haired and short haired in the same litter if one of the parents is long haired or carries the long haired gene, but the long haired gene is recessive so it needs to copies

That's what I guessed, but was initially worried they had a different species in the tank. Nope, it was a Syrian though....Glad I didn't over react and go all SAVE THE STRAY CHINESE.... Well, not really, he/she was a beauty and just stood out from the rest, who were already cuteness overload, lol. At least its probably just a litter mate, and not a mistake. Thanks for answering !

Elsa arrived yesterday and today was taming day, I started by offering her sunflower seeds which she took, then it was on to the tooth brush which she bit seven bells out off, so I decided I was going to just pick her up and handle her within a very short space of time 1 nip and 16 poos later she was relaxed sitting on the palm of my hand having a cuddle, she was so relaxed that when I put her down she was half a sleep and took er a while to come around, looking forward to tomorrow,
