bit of a job, you got there... particularly as you must not use any glue, as it is toxic. The unfortunate thing is that she will make another hole elsewhere...

Oh dear

My 7 month old longhaired sable Syrian, Molly, also decided to make a huge hole in her Alexander base on Thursday. Unfortunately hers was too big to fix, and I could never relax in case she does it again and escaped. I ordered her the zooplus Kerry terrarium so just waiting for that to arrive (she's currently in a temp cage).

I'd keep my eyes on her as if she does it again she may need to go into a tank or terrarium to keep her safe xx

Thank you all for your comments
Braingirl yes Ebony and rocket fuel has fast become a way of life in my house, sigh, I have my fingers firmly crossed that she will start to quieten down soon.

Hubby and I have spent the afternoon trying to work out how to sort this cage out. It was pointless just trying to fix this hole because she would obviously either just go back to it or move on to another place. So we came up with this idea.
We cut plywood to fit inside the base

We covered all 4 sides

Then we cut some thick doweling type wood and glued it into the corners to cover the joins

We purposefully made the wood higher than the plastic base thinking otherwise she may just sit and chew the top of the wood or even worse still manage to reach the plastic base sides over the wood. I was going to Plastikote the wood but Ebony is stressing in the bin, she has spent most of the day 'window washing' the bin sides, which sort of suggests a tank or bin probably won't work for her either. Anyway I want to get her back in her own cage and settled so I haven't got time to wait for paint to dry

Here it is finished with the top on and shelves in

Now I just need to move Ebony and all her belongings out of the bin and back into her cage and wait and see what happens next

WOW. I will have to remember this incase it happens to me. I have some wood, just in case but I dont have any plywood. I think I will have to get some in as an emergency supply. Great fix. Does she chew wood though. My Ginger chews on wood but has not chewed bars or plastic (toughing wood lol).

Thats a brilliant idea. Im really impressed, looks great if she is litter trained then leaving it without plastikote shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks Ian she has lots of homemade wooden toys which she has never chewed but she has chewed a few holes in her wooden house.
If she does chew at this wood though it won't do her any harm and it will take her awhile to get through it, although as its smooth hopefully she won't be able to get a start on it, well other than the doweling type wood in the corners which protrudes but that was only put there to pretty it up a bit, she can't get out if she eats those pieces

Thanks yes she is litter trained so its not a problem in that sense, I wanted to plastikote it to try and make it look nice.

It a really good idea WillowWisp. Keep in mind that some of it may have to be replaced at some point. She's bound to try this new stuff out. Hammies are nothing, if not persistant! What a job she did on her home. Bad hammy! :-\
