Hamsters and cats...?
Has anyone had any problems with keeping a few hamsters and a cat in the same house? Obviously I wouldn't let the cat 'play' with the hamster but I was wondering if a Kitten is brought up around hamsters will it do out of his way to get into the cages or something?
Thanks! x

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
I never had a problem when we had a cat. In fact because we had the hamster first the cat thought that the hamster must have been top dog and thought the world of her! He'd spend hours sat by her cage rubbing his face against the bars and purring contently while he watched her play.

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
We've got two cats living in the same house as Jasper, and really, they don't pay any attention. Lucky is too lazy (although he can (and does) catch mice), he doesn't care about Jasper.
Rigsy (completely indoor cat) likes to sit on top of his cage and watch him, but she wouldn't harm him. I've had him out on my bed and she just rubs on him gently and purrs
If you had an outdoor cat who had a hunting instinct, it might be a bit of a problem I think. Lucky goes outdoors maybe 3 times a week, and catches mice maybe one or two a month, so he's not a full outdoors cat!

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
Chester's an outdoor cat and spends time hunting etc.
But I don't have any problems with him around the hamsters, I always make sure he is taken out of the room before any hamster comes out to play as I wouldn't want any accidents to happen. He also doesn't take any notice of them while they are in their cages, he will sometimes stare of them, but he seems to know that the hamsters and my rabbit are out of bounds!

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
We have two cats, Cidie does not appear to know what hamsters are and does not bother them at all. She just purrs and rubs. You can sit one on her back and she does not mind! She is 17 though. Kennedy would, if he could, have one for supper!! He will sit and stare at them and go all wide eyed and pouncy. We do not keep the hamsters anywhere cats can get into and if they are near them they are supervised. Even if you think the cage is secure a cat could knock it over and dislodge the lid so it is best to keep them separate.

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
when I had a cat he was brought up to be a hunting cat and he would jump on top of the cages and stare at them for ages. though as all the cages were secure he never managed to get to any of the hamsters, but he would knock everything off the bookcases and cause a mess and a loud bang, so I was always worried that he would knock the cages off, but he never managed to.
also when we had them out in play pens and boxes we would have to make sure that he was out of the house/ room, as on a few times he went straight for them though we managed to scruff him and put him out side, though we had to hold him very tight as he kept on trying to pull himself away from me and towards to hamsters, (this happened when we thought he was outside and wasn't).
he was very frightened of them in there running balls and would run out of the house and even out of the garden when heard even the slightest of sound similar to them. I have no idea why this was .
I would have thought a kitten brought up with a house with hamsters should be fine as they get to know the rules, it's the same with rabbits I hear. though of course never leave them out in the same room together while your not there.

I have 3 cats and they just stare at the cage then walk off. One time, I had Kimmi in her ball, and my cat, Jez, came in the room, but Kimmi was chasing him and banging into his leg, he ran off, hiding behind me LOL POWER TO THE HAMSTERS!!

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
When i had my first hamster, we also had a cat. We had an incident when the cat managed to get her claw between the bars and clawed the hamster, he was fine and everything, my dad happened to be sat next to the cage at the time so shooed the cat away. She was a predator cat, loved catching mice etc

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
Yeah, the same type of theing happened to my 1st hamster, Eddie. I went on holiday with my mum and dad for 3 days, and thought that the cat was out of the house, and left Eddie in my room with enough food to last him a week! When i got back, cat poo was everywhere because the cat was trapped in the house, and the little house on his rotostak cage was popped open. I was sure that the cat had eaten him, but Eddie emerged and came down the tube, unscaved. I was amazed!

Re: Hamsters and cats...?
We've always kepts cats, so whenever we've had a hamster there has been cats around, and we've never had a problem with them.
Although apparently a cat my mum had when she was younger managed to learn how to open a gerbil cage
One of our cats loved our last hamster - she used to sit on the table next to the cage and just watch her all night, and they'd sniff eachother's noses But the cats don't seem that interested in the hamster we have at the moment - they'll have a look but that's it... although I wouldn't want to try handling Marvin with the cats in the room - they're both outdoor cats really so if Marvin made a run for it ...!
