Two new additions!
Well, we've been waiting to receive two unwanted Winter White hamsters from someone who lives near here. Sadly, just as they were going to bring them; one of them died.
Still, Harry, the remaining Winter White arrived! He's cute but we hardly see him to be honest! He's an old gentleman really at just over one year old so that could be why. When he did emerge the other night I got some pics and he's quite nervous though he took some treats from me he wasn't sure about being stroked. Well, we'll see how he's goes on but he'll be well loved here at any rate. As far as I know he's a Winter White - he did go white last winter apparently - but a hamstery expert may know better!
So here's Harry:
..... I had set up two Gabber Rex's in readiness so I had an empty one filled with toys and a wheel. Well, we've had a rough few weeks and I was really fed up so my beloved went out and got me a present knowing I had a cage ready.......
He came home with a baby Roborovski! Please don't shout at me - you all know how I feel about pet shop animals but he was a present so he's here and I will love him lots. We have been looking for rescue Robo's but there haven't been any round here in any of the larger or smaller independent rescues for weeks. I was going to travel to a breeder but then we got offered the two WW's so I decided to leave it altogether and just enjoy these two as they needed a home. But then we ended up with just one WW and so I've ended up with my 'surprise' Robo.
He's named Tiny for the moment.... for obvious reasons!

Re: Two new additions!
They are two very pretty hammys
No one is going to shout at you for having a pet shop ham, why should they?
A lot of hamsterys have the odd pet shop hamster that we have fell in love with it is nothing to feel guilty over. After all they deserve love as much as a breeder ham does.

Both gorgeous! Robos are so cute!
Up until now all my hamsters have been pet shop hamsters so I don't think you should feel bad at all or apologise that you have Tiny. Plus you've been checking Rescues which is a lot more than a lot of people do!
I hope they both settle in well!

Re: Two new additions!
Thanks! I didn't plan to get a pet shop 'ham but my beloved thought it would be a lovely surprise, and it was! Tiny is soooo fast on his wheel it's amazing, lol. He just looks far too small for his legs to be going so ridiculously fast!

What type of wheel do you have? My robo goes so fast on his silent spinner that he ends up flying out of the side!

Re: Two new additions!
Awww they are so gorgeous. I think the rescue is a little normal winter white maybe with some winter coat still showing. He is probably a bit shy just now with the stress of moving home and losing his partner all at once so I am sure once he is settled he will become nice and tame and friendly.
Tiny is so cute too and what a lovely surprise. Pet shop hammies are just as lovely as any hamster. We have had plenty and currently have Lola who is a pet shop hammy. She is just as lovely and loved as all the others.

It is a regular silent spinner - and yes, he does just that! Frightens me to death at times watching him land in his cage but he seems fine. He loves his sand bath too - not sure he really rolls in it yet but he sort of runs round in it and digs then goes back to his wheel.
Souffle - the two WW's were housed separately - it was the usual story - sold two as a same sex pair and then they had babies! :P So they were being kept separately. I think Harry is just a bit shy with all the changes; it's a lot to happen to a little hamster. The girl who's hamster it had been came with her mum to drop him off and just didn't seem in the least bit bothered about him going...... sad really.
But still, their loss is our gain. I firmly believe all pet shop hammies are as deserving as love and care as any other ham' but I don't like where their usually from and how they're bred (large chain store) without going into things - it's a personal opinion only and everyone feels differently about these things.
However, on the positive side, my beloved reassured me that he was well grilled before being allowed to bring Tiny home and the man he spoke to seemed very knowledgable. Tiny was the only one left. I think I've got a lovely husband though, bless him! He has said (and yes this has been said many times before!) that we are definitely full from now on, lol.
Thanks so much for all the lovely comments. Will you keep you all updated with their progress!

Harry and Tiny will be loved and well cared for with you and OH so don't you go apologising to anyone
I bet Tiny looks like a blur on his wheel :P
And little Harry looks shy there but i bet it won't take you long to get him out of his shell.

Re: Two new additions!
Hello Hanlou! Nice to see you again, and with two new beauties to present to us
They are lovely, and as others have said, whatever your feelings about the pet shop trade, every ham deserves a loving home, and little Tiny has really landed on his feet with you
Harry has such a cute expression, I am sure he is a little unsettled and nervous, but that he will soon realise how much fun it is having a new Mummy to play with
