Default Lazy Hamster

Hi,

I've done some snooping around the internet and not really come up with my much of an answer so I'll see if you guy's can help me here. I've got a new hamster about 5 days ago named flooffy and he sleeps very often until midnight or later. I was wondering if such a late wake up time is usual for a younger hamster, when i got him the breeder said he was only about 5 weeks old. Any suggestions or reasons on why he wakes up so late would be of great benefit.

Thanks very much

He is still very much a baby so he will sleep a lot however we find that younger hammies are normally more active on the whole. Have you checked him to make sure he is well. You need to check his botty for any signs of diarrhoea or wetness particularly. This is common when hammies move to a new home as it is a stressful event for them. Have you seen him out and about later on in the night? Does he look glossy and bright eyed? If you see no signs of illness then you can start taming him and training him to get up at a signal from you. We rub the bars, call the hammy by name or russle the shavings. They usually can't resist coming out for a nosey. Give a little treat. Look at the taming tips article on the WIKI and start taming him soon. If you find any sign of illness take him to the vets. Make sure he can reach the water bottle and knows where it is and it is working well as dehydration can cause lethargy. Rub the spout with cucumber to attract him to it. Hopefully the breeder has handled him from a yound age and he will tame easily.

My hamster doesn't wake up until around then as well, he's about 6 months old now. Luckily I am still wide awake then so I can play with him. I think it just depends on the hamster!

Thanks for the advice souffle, I've not noticed a wet bum when handling him so that's a good sign, he does know where his water bottle is because i've seen him wake up in the day and use it. He is up alot in the night because i can he wakes me up now and again when he's on the wheel. I'll try the bar rubbing and see how that works out.

Thanks for your advice
