Default All the weird names people call hamster species.....

I've been meaning to put together a short article for the site for a while, giving all the odd names that pet shops call hamsters!!! I thought a brain-storming thread would be in order.....if anyone has seen some fancily named exotic variety of hamster advertised, add it to the thread!!!

Here's ones that I've come across (also including standard alternatives for some varieties):

Golden - Syrian (any colour)

Fancy - Syrian

Teddy Bear - Long-haired Syrian

European Black Bear - Black Syrian

Polar Bear - White Syrian

Panda Bear - Black Banded Syrian

Red Fox - Cinnamon ? Syrian

Alien - Hairless Syrian

Desert - Roborovski

Djungarian - Campbells?

Siberian - Winter White?

Blackberry - what did we decide these were?

Striped - Chinese

Hairy-footed - Chinese? or Campbells/WW?

I decided the BlackBerry hamsters where just Chinese hamsters with a unique coloration. They looked like chinese hamsters.

Blackberry is a commonly used term for these coulours of Campbells too though I think that petshop was a one off

Standard Hamster = Syrian Hamster (normally Golden)

Black Bear = Black Syrian Hamster

Chinese are sometimes called Striped Dwarf Hamster (although not actually technically a dwarf ) or Striped Hamster. They are a member of the Rat-like Hamsters group. Striped Hamster can cause confusion as this is also used to refer to Russian Dwarf Hamsters, also known as Djungarian (or Dzungarian), Hairy-footed, and even the Mongolian Dwarf Hamster.
