I went into my loacl pet shop and talked to one of the girls there about the syrians that had just arrived, and she said that they often get wet tail in there shop, and now I'm a bit worried to buy much from them for my hamsters. I know it seems silly but if you went there you would see that it's not really a clean shop and all the hamster toys and food is right next to the cages. and they don't wash there hands after handling the ill hamsters.
but what do you think I should do? I might be making a fuss about nothing, but better safe than sorry.
I think you have answered your own question - leave well alone, especially if they openly admit to having a lot of cases of wet-tail and they don't wash their hands after handling ill hammies since it can be contracted through contact.
Search for another shop, purchase from a breeder or look for a rescue (breeders and rescues wouldn't jeopardise the health of the animals like that)
there is a chance the products could carry the infection but more to the point do you really want to buy from somewhere that shows that little regard that they are buying in animals that are ill...or that the way they are being kept is causing them to become stressed enough to develop it ....i personally wouldnt touch them with a barge pole
I'd vote with my feet and stay away. We have a similar pet store here although it is part of a chain store (and the other ones around here are much better) where I've only spent 80p in the last four years (when I've needed to) and warned a few other people I know too.
I'm really surprised it hasn't closed down, as there are loads of pet shops around my area and it doesn't seem to do much business. There are quite a few bigger shops in this place closing down which will make it lose more business no doubt.
