Default Empty Tank Syndrome

Hi guys,

So we lost Boo a week ago, and looking at her stuff still makes me turn into a blubbering baby, but her tank is definitely the worst. It's too big to store, and while I'm trying to sell it, I'm in a small area so it's not likely. I keep seeing these ads on kijiji for hamsters in tiny cages and all I can think is that I have tank, all the stuff (except for the things that I can't give another hamster since they were just hers...you know?), so it would be of literally no cost to me. But on the other side of that, the idea of putting someone else into her tank just seems unthinkable. My OH says that when the time is right I'll know, but am I being selfish holding out on one of these hamsters because I can't get over Boo?

I don't think you are being selfish at all! Your OH is right with saying that...if it's meant to be, it will be, and no doubt a little furry will come along and you will know what the right decision is.
It's always so hard losing a much loved little one...she will never be replaced even if another hamster is in her tank, but don't rush yourself into anything because it's the last thing you need at this time x

You poor darling. I'm so sorry you've lost boo. But no, you aren't being selfish, what would be selfish is if you still weren't over Boo and went and got another anyway and put that hamster in her tank. Then you wouldn't be able to love and care for the new hamster like it would deserve, and you would feel liek the new hamster was an intruder in Boo's home.
I would just wait until you're in the petshop, and you fall in love all over again. I wouldn't force it, give yourself time. Boo is playing at the bridge missing you something crazy I'm sure, and all you can do is what is best for YOU right now.

You will find one that "speaks" to you and you will know it's the right time to take another fur ball to love.
Keep the tank, Boo will be happy that another hamster can live a great life in it like she did!

Not selfish at all. I too was devastated when we lost our hamsters. Each time we put a bin cage in the basement, it was like losing them again. It took a few months before I was able to think seriously about another one and then my family took that decision out of my hands for me.

{Hugs} I know it hurts and it feels like it would be going against Boo's memory to even think of getting another hammy. But there will never be another Boo. (I don't mean the name...I mean the hammy personality). Every hamster is special and deserves our sadness and grief when they leave us. Boo wasn't even mine and my heart hurt at his passing . Patches' death was so much easier for me because of Hamster Central. Being able to drown you guys in her photos on the February photo thread really helped. Back before I joined Hamster Central, my wonderful hamster Coco died of cancer. I still had Patches, who was still very young, but Coco's death hit me really hard and I couldn't even clean his cage for about a month. I would walk by it and miss him so much. It was seeing all the hammies here after I joined that made me consider getting more hamsters, thus, Ted E., Toffee & Almond. They are now helping me deal with my girl's loss. It takes time, and that time is different for everyone. Some need a new hammy right away because they cannot handle the empty cage. Some can't bear to have another hammy in that cage just yet. It's very individual. You take the time you need. Boo was so very loved. At some point you will see a hammy face who needs to know what that love feels like too. Then, that cage will hold another little love. Peace will come in time <3

You guys really are some of the most wonderful individuals that I have ever had contact with, and I don't know most of your real names, but I mean every bit of it. I think part of the hardship I have right now without her is that our home has gone down to one hamster so quickly. A year ago, we had five ham bums in this apartment, and it is so bizarre thinking that she was what sparked me getting on to this community, and later even on to youtube. Not taking the importance away from the other fuzzballs that we have loved and lost in our home, but Boo was just a bit different, and I figure she'll let me know which hamster to welcome and when, in her own twisted way. Heck, knowing her, it'll end up being some random one that is stuck upside down somewhere or aimlessly licking a wall. Til then, I have the pigs who seem to want more cuddle time this week than usual (I would say Mowgli, but that cheeky girl lives in her own bubble). Thank you everyone for the peace of mind

I'm sure Boo would be happy for you give some of your love to another hamster. She'll know you don't love her any the less.
