Default Pet shop hamsters

I went to Pets At Home this afternoon just to buy the last few things left in the shop that Chewy doesn't own, and I stumbled across 2 Syrian males in the adoption centre called Christopher and Spot. Obviously I wanted to take them both home. It's heartbreaking as they have apparently been there quite a while....
My question is - do they get taken out at night or do they literally sit there forever until someone takes them home?
I am fighting the urge to go back for them!

I've never outright asked but I always had the impression that they live in the display cages. It'd be really unsettling for them to move from one cage to another every morning and night.

Its not great but its probably less stress than moving to another cage overnight would be.

I don't think chain petstore hams are ever played with most of the time

Oh yes I didn't think about the stress of moving them... They did have a few toys but didn't have a wheel so I guess they don't get to move much.... I'm in a different town to where I live otherwise one (or both) would've come home with me!!

Poor hams
Its a shame you couldn't get one (or both) but if you're not at home then its probably for the best. They will find a good home in time, our first two robos had been in a P@H adoption centre for a while but it worked out nicely for them in the end

I know it was SO tempting... But I don't have my spare cage with me. And I guess I need to be more hardened when I go in there otherwise my flat will end up full of hamsters!!

They do not handle the hamsters at all really. And they do live in the displays.
It is a sad injustice, but there is nothing we can really do about it.
Pet shops want to inhumanely house and sell hamsters for profit, and Hamster mills want to pump out hamsters to give to them.
Its a never ending, very sad cycle. Even if you had taken those two, two more would be shipped in to replace them. Thats what I tell myself to keep from leaving with every hamster in there.

It's worse to know that there are probably more for adoption kept in the back of the store too. I re-homed a ham a few weeks ago and even though they had two empty adoption cages...they had a lot of other hamsters in the back. My Angel was a few months old and left outside a pet store, my Hatton has been here nearly two years now and he was left outside with dwarf hamsters.

Once I went to Pets at Home just before it was closing as I needed to rush in and buy some rabbit food, and I noticed the staff were holding the hamsters there was this beautiful white Syrian hamster... I was tempted to bring him home with me! But unfortunatly I had no spare hamster cages at the time

It's just so tempting to take them home!! I am such a soft touch... Although just the one Syrian keeps me plenty busy enough at the moment!! But the older chaps I saw earlier were so incredibly tempting
