Not sure what you're living situation is but is there anyway you could lift her cage into the bathroom each night before you go to bed, then move her back through in the morning?

I had a monster chewer and no matter what I tried, eventually it came down to moving her into a glass tank or giving her away. I could not live with the noise at night.

I would be wary of putting a Ham that loves to chew into a plastic tank as they can still make a remarkable amount of noise chewing on the plastic... as I found out! A cheap bin to test how noisy she is in that kind of environment (and check for mad plastic chewing tendencies!) seems like a sensible plan though.

Sally-the-monster didn't seem to appreciate her tank at first, but she's settled in fine now so if you give moving your girl a go then make sure you give enough opportunity for her to discover that her new cage is still a nice place to be... they do take a while to feel like a new space is home!

Thanks for everyone's advice. I'm not too keen on the bin cages just because most of them aren't completely transparent and I like to see what my hamsters are doing when I walk past in the hallway or from the kitchen so I'd like something I can see through from a distance. Her wheel isn't a problem. It used to squeek but I put some olive oil on it and that solved that problem. Her cage is quite old anyway so I think she needs a new one anyway.
Has anyone tried the anti bite spray? Not sure if I should give that a go.

I've found, with rodents anyway, that anti-bite spray is just spice to them. I really do like big aquariums, as gerbil homes anyway, haven't kept a hamster in one. They're easy to disinfect and give an excellent view of the pets inside. Only problem is they're heavy. There's one I've seen on here that looks really good that's made of plexiglass. It's huge and has wood accents. Maybe that would work for you?

Syrians (not all) can be good at this behaviour. It`s a `learned` behaviour and one that is usually attention seeking. But without going into the psyche of the hamster mind!.... your best bet would be to find either a large glass aquarium going cheap (nice and long and tall enough for a big wheel) or a Zoozone 2. Or of course, a large Bin storage box that could be adapted by meshing the lid. Meshing the front might cause injury to the teeth, so in this cage, I wouldn`t mesh the front.

The only drawbacks with glass is the weight, so the tank would probably need to be static or on the floor. A Zozone 2 might still have `chewing` spots where a hamster finds weak spots and exploits them, like the water bottle spout gap or managing to reach the grill over the top by climbing up onto a toy to reach it. A metal washer can be used over the hole where the water bottle goes through and screwed into place though prior to preparing the cage.

I wouldn`t use anti-chew sprays. You could try wrapping strips of cardboard through the bars? But bar chewing can be a nightmare, so the above proposals are the ones I would be looking at. Happy hamster, good nights sleep!

I have a 20 gallon tank for my Triscuit. She stays in my room. I got her the Silent Spinner and she loves chewing on Edible Logz which are quiet.

I highly recommend the tank. It's easy for my to clean, and it keeps drafts out. It'll be a good investment!

I've heard that bitterness like lemon juice (from an actual lemon not from a bottle)or bitter apple spray works if you spray it on the bars.

But then do you want your hamster`s mouth being acidified by bitter lemon or apple? If the chewing continues, this stuff could harm the hamsters delicate skin on the side of the mouth. I would go with the threaded cardboard strips or actually cable-tie boards inside the bars where the hamster chews?

But wouldn't she chew it, taste the bitterness and not chew it again?

It isn't worth it as you may have to spray it on all of the bars if she moves to another place to chew. Not forgetting a ham's sense of smell, it wouldn't be pleasant for her. If she is a persistent chewer she may still try and chew it anyway so it is no guarantee to work.
