I tried to find some small animal rescues near you but couldn't find any. A lot of larger rescues get hamsters in from time to time though.

I know that on my local Gumtree website there is often hamsters looking for new homes. Also, you could look on Preloved. Both websites have hamsters on them a lot. Some would claim this isn't rescuing, but it's the closest thing to if there are no rescues near you. Although, on those websites there are often baby hamsters for sale, which are being sold by (usually, but not always) irresponsible breeders, so you might want to ignore those...

There's a couple at the SSPCA looking for homes, but thats a bit far from you! Like Jane above me said, there's usually people who can look after them anymore wanting to give up hamsters, good luck!

There are often hamsters for adoption in the Pets@Home rescue centres. They sometimes have robos. The adoption centre is run by a charity and any donations go to the charity so it is just as good a place to adopt as any I think. Our local branch had a syrian and a Winter white with special needs in this week. I hope you find a lovely little hammie soon

How far is Godmanchester (Cambs) from you? Too far? Wood Green Animal Shelter at Godmanchester nearly always have hamsters in - last time I was there they had a couple of Syrians and some very young WWs (3 weeks old).

i just look on preloved and go for ones that say older ham that kids have got bored with or something like that, rather than the ones who've bred on purpose. they can lie in what they've made. I only get the single ones that are being dumped due to lack of interest and i also prefer to get ones in rubbish cages, too, so i can give them a bit of heaven in a big cage here rather than them being sold on and kept in those prisons.

I agree with Bunsey I would also go for the most "un wanted" and "un loved" one possible, even if it means waiting for a bit one will invariably come up, they always do - especially at this time of year when people are going away on holiday and can't be bothered to find someone to look after their pets

I do wish I'd known you were looking, I was in Suffolk on Saturday and I have a little 5 week old rescue girlie here who will go to the Pets At Home Adoption centre, I could have bought her for you how annoying!

You can also try this site

You are very kind to get a rescue. I will do the same when I have more experience.

I've had more rescues than breeder hams. I've had 2 from pets at home adoption, 1 from a shelter and the rest (about 7 or 8 ) just from responding to ads by people who were dumping an unwanted hamster. The latter sorts come in such terrible tiny, filthy cages and i definately call it rescuing.

for example, this is the mouse starter cage that one hamster had spent his life in:

He was a very small hamster and if he stood on back legs, his head touched the roof. The wheel didn't turn and he had no other toys. It had piles of poo and urinated bedding. Almost all of my rescues have arrived in these conditions. One lady had a similar cage that was filled with only straw and nothing else. She'd been living like that for 18 months.

The worst thing is that it's not a small minority of hams that live like this, it's millions.

Look at this beautiful, intelligent lady... She came from a home where hamsters lived in Hagen carry cases with a bowl of water.
