Question Just some questions..

The last hamster I owned was 10 years ago- when I was 5. So I know minimum about hamsters really. But I have some questions about my Syrian hamster Sammie.

She hasn't been eating much, like at all. I got her the 9th of November. I got 1 pound of the food they had been feeding her at the petshop I bought her from. She didn't seem to interested in it and hardly ate. So I went to another store and bought a fruit flavored treat mix to add into her food. She ate that for alittle bit and then stopped eating once again. So today a week later- I bought a new kind of food and she seems mildly interested in it. I offer her fruits and vegetables about twice aweek. I'm thinking of constructing a diet plan for her. Any ideas on why she could not be eating? Could she be getting bored eating the same thing all the time? She looks like she's losing weight is what's worrying me..

How did you tame your hamster? I love Sammie to death, she's starting to grow on me. I'm having problems picking her up and getting her use to being handled. I've been wearing thick gloves when I hold her until I get her used to being held incase she bites. Which I know is bound to happen sooner or later but for now I just want to be cautious. I read online somewhere to put a blanket of yours in the bathtub and sit in the bathtub on the blanket with your hamster to get them use to your scent. But, when I tried that she got scared and started getting anxious so I decided not to do it again. So how did you tame your hamster and get them to trust you? I feel like we have a potential to have a great relationship if I can get her to trust me and let me pet her and hold her.

Last question, do hamsters enjoy being in hamster balls? I've heard some say hamsters hate them and others say they love them. Does it just depend on the hamster? Like, I feel like Sammie enjoys playing in her ball. If she was running around panicking I wouldn't put her in there. But, when I put her in there she calmly runs around will stop and look around before running around again. So she just explores the house. But, I'm just wondering why people think hamsters hate them? Are they bad for the hamster? Do they stress them out? I take Sammie out every 15-20 minutes and let her drink and if she acts like she wants play again then I take her out again after she has a break. I just don't want to put her in a ball if it scares her or stresses her out.

Thank you for answers in advance!

Default Re: Just some questions..

Did you say you've got your new hamster 9th of November ? If so you need to give your hammy time to settle down first then eventually she'll get used to you. It took me good few moths to get to know my hamster! I did sit with her in bath tub but didn't find very useful so I put her little hide house next to her and let her run around on bed and whenever she felt uncomfortable she run and hid in her house. It took ages but was fun watching her run around. 20 min in ball is good time and my hammy does exactly same thing as yours. Just calmly and cautiously rolls around and stops and stares then rolls again. But when she panics she seem to speed up or freeze in one spot. That's when I pick her up and put her back in her cage.
If you worried about her not eating you could offer her baby food and soak some of her mix in baby food and offer her.
How do you know she is loosing weight? Did you weigh her ? If she is loosing weight rapidly she might have health issues and need to be checked by vet. I'd really advice to weight her with kitchen digital scale.
Good luck
