Default How can I keep my hamster warm?

Hey guys,
So November has hit and it has suddenly got pretty cold.
I'm wanting some advice on how to keep Scrubby warm in this weather.
My room isn't very well insulated and usually gets very cold, also she lives next to the window (there isn't any room anywhere else)
I do usually put the heating on for a bit before I go to bed and that does warm up the room but after about an hour it's back to the cold.
She seems pretty warm in her bed but she isn't in there all the time and at night when she is out in her cage, that's when it's coldest.
It doesn't seem to have been a problem yet but i'd still like some tips just to be safe.

Cheers guys

How cold are we talking? Hamsters can usually tolerate temperatures down to about 16 c, anything colder than that and they will show signs of decreased activity. Generally hammies are pretty much like humans in that the same temperature ranges we find comfortable is good for them. You might try hanging up some thicker curtains over the window. Otherwise maybe get a cheap ceramic heater that can provide a little bit of heat towards her cage.

I put fleece blankets under the cages when it's cold. I don't know if it helps but it makes me feel better. Otherwise, put it lots of bedding. I guess when they're running around at night that keeps them warm - running around keeps me warm anyway.

Thanks for the tips.
I have put some extra bedding in as well as some shredded paper towel and I think i'm gonna buy a little heater for my room.
Earlier I put a cardigan over the cage while she was asleep and I was quite surprised at the difference it made. It just stopped the cold getting in.
The cold hasn't seemed to effect her in the slightest which is good.
She's still as happy as larry.

When it starts to get super cold I have plans to put Harry's cage up on legs/a couple of books each side, wrap a WARM (not hot, not boiling) hot water bottle up an a blanket and put that under his cage. I know he's warm in his nest so I'm going to put it in the middle of his cage just so he's a bit warmer. I've also found that the boxes our company stationery comes in are the same width as his cage so I can cover half of it with one of those just to stop any drafts.

If anyone thinks the hot water bottle is bad idea please let me know! But as I say it will just be warm water.

Last Christmas I put a blanket or dressing gown over my hamsters cage as my windows are not the best fitted and in the end he was getting bored and chewing it. I think that I might have to buy a blanket especially for him so I can put it over his cage. You might want to do that as hamster cages have wire which hamsters decide to chew the blanket/jumper through the wire. Just warning you as I put my most memorable blanket over his cage and he chewed most of it.

I hear some people put heating pads on half the bottom of the cage, on the lowest setting.

When I heating broke last autumn I started putting a snugglesafe under the base of Fluffy's cage. I also put a blanked over the top, back and sides of Ligeia's tank.

As long as it's not too cold, don't worry too much. What you do have to watch out for is cold drafts slipping in through the bars. If you're worried that it's really quite chilly in the room, the advice given so far is good!
In the past I've propped up cages on stacks of books and put a warm (not hot) hot water bottle wrapped in a towel underneath. Don't let it touch the cage, it's good to have a gap of air between the cage and the heat.

Other than that, I have spare low-watt heat mats for snake hatchlings. They do get pretty warm, but if you leave a gap between it and the cage, like with the hot water bottle, it should stop the plastic getting hot. If you keep reptiles and have a thermostat (matstat) brilliant, because you can set it at a low temperature.

I've also heard of people filling old water bottles with warm water, wrapping in in fleece or a blanket and putting it next to the nest.

When i had my hammy my room was regularly about 5 degrees in autumn/winter, i got some thick plastic sheeting to stapel at the windows (and block the draughts) and put heavy and thick curtains up - thick velvet i think.
Another option is get an oil filled radiator and keep it on low - most are economical, mine cost £2 a day in electric for whole flat useage (had no gas or central heating, everything ran on electric and was on a meter) it'll keep the chill off the room and will be more comfortable for your baby.
