i nearly just binned a hamster
well the title sums it up perfectly i am cleaning out all my cages today and without thinking i just took all the toys and the shelf out of louvois cage an then just binned the substrate without taking louvois out when I finished cleaning i thought wares louvois. i then rushed outside with the bin bag and ripped it open in our garden at the spot were we have our bonfires manly so I dint have to clear it up and found him in the middle of the pile
A warning be careful were you leave your hams

That's awful.. hope you've learned from your mistake and now remove hamsters before trying to take shortcuts!

Lucky you didn't suffocate him, I cant imagine it possible to forget theres a hamster in the cage considering you need to put them in a ball/carrier to start with. I hope this has taught you to be more careful.

Re: i nearly just binned a hamster
Hehe, poor wee lumpster!!!
I've done this before, however, it was two syrians i didnt know we had!
It was Bingo's babies (BVH has the remaining one), I knew we mated Bingo but she never showed signs of being pregnant, didnt get big, came back into season but as we found we had to move house, we didnt try to remate her (luckily!) but with all the crazy mess moving house with so many animals, Bingo went for 10 days before being cleaned out and i discovered the hard way she had created a double nest like rats do. She has a top nest for herself and a secret nest sealed underneath with her two babies (explains why she never got big!) and they were 10 - 12 days old when i saw them as i tipped them into the bin bag!! No wonder poor Bingo didnt want to come out her cage! She was very happy to get them back and did a good job of raising them.

Re: i nearly just binned a hamster
i've nearly done this. one time i nearly chucked a robo baby, cos i thought i'd counted them all, but then i saw one just before i chucked the nest!
also, much worse... my mum nearly dunked a robo baby in boiling water. She counted all the robo babies and took them out... then she went to wash the ceramic baguette house in boiling water. she lifted it up to dunk it into the bowl and saw a face looking back at her! obviously she counted the same one twice or something!

Re: i nearly just binned a hamster
Oopsie note to self remember to remove hamster first. Fortunatly I don't think I have ever done it. Apart from Tochi they all go in balls Tochi wonders round the utility room top whilst we are washing the cage he only sits behind the washing bin thinks he's clever lol. Kumi he goes in a ball whilst we do his cage only cause he leaps and then he has cuddles after cage cleaned. When we have had babies they go in a box whilst we do the cage.
Bunsey that was lucky phew.
