Lightbulb Maybe found solution for the super stink

I feel like such an idiot as I just realized something a few days ago about my super stinky Robo boys.

My boys may not be naturally stinky, but just scent marking like crazy every time I clean their bin cage! It would make much more sense than they just being naturally very smelly.

I came to this idea while reading a thread about mice. The owner has to clean only half of their boy mice's cage and then the other half next time they clean cages otherwise the boy mice will scent mark like crazy and the cage would really stink.

I'm going to try this when I next clean out my Robo boys' cage and see if the smell goes down. I'll let you guys know if it works out and if the smell lessens.

I'm having the same problem with my chinese hamsters Yuj and Snow...i cleaned out their cage just a week ago and it's aleady starting to smell! So i may try out this as well but...if you just clean out half of the cage...wouldn't it really start to stink if you just leave in the old stuff?

Hmm... Maybe. But it's recommended to clean the cage out about every week, so one half will only be in for a week longer than normal. My boys' cage starts really smelling within 24 hours after cleaning and it smells something really foul. So that's what I'm working on getting under control. If your problem is just the cage is started to smell after a week, it just needs cleaning out again.

We don't clean our cages too much (we keep them clean obviously) the hams don't scent much and don't stink - its got to be worth a go, right?

The girls I don't keep to the weekly clean out as they don't smell and I don't like disturbing elderly Charlotte as much. I do try to keep the weekly cleanout with the boys because they are very stinky, but it doesn't always work out.

But yes, anything will be better than the smell the boys can produce. I'm just glad they're in a bin cage and the bin holds most of the smell in, though if you're near it you do smell it.
