Default Adopting a one eyed Russian hamster

My vet called me a couple of nights ago to tell me that a Russian hamster had been found in a cage down an alley with one eye hanging out and had been brought to her hospital. She didn't think she'd be able to save the eye but was going to operate anyway given she is young and has nothing else wrong with her. The hammie survived and is now ready for rehousing but who's going to want a one eyed 43g Russian hamster?

The reason my vet called me was to ask if I'd take her on and adopt her since I've cared for a number of sick Syrian hamsters over the years. Unfortunately I've never had a Russian hamster and therefore have no experience in caring for them. Are they much different to care for than a Syrian?

What do I need to know before I commit to taking on this responsibility?

Many thanks

Emma

I have a one eyed syrian and he's amazing
The only thing you have to be careful of with a one eyed ham is not to sneak up on them! Because they cant see you coming towards them if you're on the wrong side you can make them jump.

I dont think dwarf hams are much different to look after than syrians.
I feed my dwarfs and syrians different food but that's about it.
Oh and because the hamster you may be taking is a hybrid that means they are diabetes prone so shouldn't have too many sugary treats.

I've finally decided on a name for the latest addition to my hamster family. I couldn't name her Admiral Nelson given she's a girl so I decided to name her after Nelson's lover - Lady Hamilton! A bit of a mouthful so she's also known as 'Lady H' or 'H' to her friends.

I'll post a pic as soon as I've worked out how to do it!

Well done you for deciding to take the little one on! I love the name Lady Hamilton.

Dwarfs aren't a lot different to Syrians in care You should avoid sugary treats/fruits, as she might be diabetic prone. They tend to eat about the same amount daily. She won't need the same sized wheel as a Syrian would or she may struggle to move it. But alike many 'Syrian sized' products, they're often too small if sold as 'Dwarf sized'. So you should go for what is marketed as 'Syrian sized' for a dwarf, so for example, a 6.5" silent spinner/flying saucer or similar wheel. The cage doesn't need to be quite so big either, but of course bigger is always better! As for handling, she might be a bit quicker than a Syrian, but it's something you will get used to with time

Looking forward to seeing Lady Hamilton!
