Default My New Hammie - More Piccies!

I just picked up my new rescue Syrian hammie from Babyboos. Oh, she is such a cutie.

I managed to get a couple of (not so good) photos before my batteries ran out. *sigh* sods law.

She has been exploring all over the couch and my wee boys bed, now she is sleeping after re-arranging her new house to her liking. What an eventful day the wee soul has had.

'So much things to do, so little time' - unsuccesful first attempt

Would have been better if it wasn't out of focus and if I hadn't chopped the top of her head off

Better, look at that gorgeous wee face, just asking to be hugged

Default Mimosa

Melting at her little face - she really is gorgeous - reminds me yet again that I love Sables. And due to amount of time we spent with this wee girl she is special but I know Emma and her family will give her the best home possible.

I equate her as more rescued from her mother than any direct human cruelty. She came in with her 3 sisters to be fostered here originally as their mother, a Longhaired Sable pregnant petstore hamster had eaten all the other babies in her litter - including all the males presumably and their owner had removed these girls to stop them being eaten too.

She didn't feel up to hand-rearing so brought them to us. She is really a nice lady, the hamster was not known to be pregnant when purchased so she had no idea she would potentially have to deal with babies. One of Mimosa's sisters has gone back to stay with her, in a seperate cage from mum of course. They all had to be seperated around 6 weeks though as they squabbled quite badly amongst themselves which is not entirely unsusual with females.

Longhaired hamsters can sometimes be difficult to sex the petstore advised the lady when she contacted them. She had come in with some boys and they had been led to believe she was male too. They offered to take the girls back to sell but we decided I would find them new homes instead. There were no other hamsters in her cage when she was purchased so we just hope the others were actually all boys and not any more wrongly sexed females.

Sexing is something stores need to take more responsibility for - when they get hamstrs in from the general public they should not take the sexes for granted, after all they have no way of knowing the experience level of the breeder a lot of the time, especially if they are just a one-off supplier.

I have come across many cases of people buying a hamster from a petstore thinking it was one sex only to find out a few days/weeks after bringing him/her home that he/she is infact the opposite sex.

Absolutley agree, I think if a store cannot sex an animal competantly, they should not sell them. No more of this nonsense 'This store cannot guarantee the sex of any animal sold' Why not?

Many years ago ( )when I was younger I used to be the Livestock Supervisor in Petsmart. I took the job thinking how wonderful, I love animals, what a great way to handle and care for so many different types of animals.

I still have nightmares about that job. I was the only one who actually cared about them. If you were unsure about a customers knowledge or abilty to give the animal a good/suitable home you could refuse to sell it. Which I did on many occasions, but all that happened was that they would compain at the office and the manager would sell them the animal. What was the point?

You got a print out every week with the list of animals available, most from that vile mass producing rodent farm/snake food centre in Essex. You would fill out the little boxes with the required number and then days later small corrugated plastic containers filled with mixed sex unhandled poorly bred animals arrived in the shop. All they had between about 20-30 animals was a cut up apple.

They were starving and dehydrated and as wild as the hills and they were available for sale the minute they arrived in the shop.

I left after 6 horrible months with extreme stress and a house full of animals. On my first day I noticed an ill rabbit on the shop floor. It turned out to only have three legs and one of them had been broken and set at a bizarre angle and no-one had noticed! I took him home, he only lived for about 6 months but it had to have been better than where he came from.

Oo, that was a long post for me but I could go on all day about the horror stories that occured on a daily basis. I suppose that is what happens when they employed non-animal lovers on minimum wage and made them work overtime for a normal hours pay.

Sometimes we were working from 8.00 in the morning through to 2.00am the next morning on stocktakes and you had to start again at 8.00 with just your normal hourly wage.

All the staff tried to take shortcuts all the time, which does not work out with animals and sadly, it was the animals that suffered. The other members of staff knew they could leave everything and that I would do it, as a result I got very, very stressed and ill.

Totally off topic, but another upsetting thing was that the local SSPCA used to bring in unwanted animals that had been brought into the centre and give them free of charge to petsmart to sell!!!

Default PetsMart

Oh Emma how awful for you - I did a weekend and evening job for a short period at Pets at Home while at university thinking yeah I can get in there and help them make a difference - this will be the best Pets at Home store and sadly the attitude of the management stunk - not all of my colleagues were bad - some loved animals as much as me and we all took sick and unsaleable (due to tameness issues usually) animals home, but the management were more interested in keeping shelves stocked than animals cared for. I couldn't take t any longer it was pure slave labour most of the time and I was getting so depressed my other half said enough is enough. Myself and a friend went to the SSPCA and they came along and made all sorts of recommendations such as enforcing 2 week quarantine but who knows if they really are, this was three years ago afterall, and they still run rabbits and guinea pigs together, and sell knowingly pregnant livestock. I totally agree if you cannot gaurantee the sex of animal it should not be sold especially as many species such as dwarf hamsters must live in company or you shorten their lifespan.

She is absolutely beautiful. Just like our Runty also a Sable, though he is a decidedly greyer colour now that he is nearly 3. Hope she has such a long and lively life and you have fun together
