Default PetsMart in Warwick Rhode Island hamsters are back....

My husband and I went there this weekend to pick up a few pet supplies. I noticed they had rodents back up for sale since that whole LCMV rodent disease thing.

Someone told me that sometime PetsMart will make special orders for certain animals so I asked about an employee about it and said I was looking for a dwarf Roborovski hamsters and wondered if they did that.

Apparently she said they had roborovkis about a month back! I have never seen them in stores like Petsmart before. She said that right now though they are searching for a new breeder so it may be a while and they aren’t sure if the breeder will do special orders or not but to check back in a month or so to see because they plan on finding a new breeder soon and aren’t dealing with the one the previously had.

Interesting...

No, there was a person in NY that said they expected a litter whithin the next month or so and would let me know when the pups drop. But I havnt heard a thing! thats why this new PetsMart news interests me.

Poor Pichu is still living on his own, but he seems quite happy. If I got my hands on a robo or two belive me everyone would know :P

Candace, have you heard this yet? I got this in an email from the Humane Society of the United States today. I am only posting the link as that is all that is relavent to this thread.

I know you are a bit skeptical about this whole mill thing and disease etc, but I really wouldn't trust those large chains.

This is directly linked to your stores and these are the kinds of people they have been receiving animals from.

I would also be very careful and ask lots of questions about the private breeders they are getting 'special orders' from. If they are reluctant to give you a name, or location at the least, I wouldn't touch them.

Anyone who would get involved with somthing like this would most likely wind up on the short end of the stick and put in a position of constant demand.

That leaves the poor hamsters to do all the 'work' and the whole circle of mill breeding begins anew.

Default The sad bit...

Mizer said if the tests are negative for LCMV, the distribution center will be released from its quarantine. If it's positive, the ODA will kill all 3,500 to 4,500 animals in the facility and do a thorough cleaning of the building. Until then, employees are allowed to work in the facility to care for the remaining rodents.
