Default Cant Different Dwarf Species Be Housed Together?

Someone sent me an email asking this....

Quote:
I just purchased a Roborovski Hamster. I was looking into purchsing another hamster but I wasn't sure which hamsters she would get along with (if any)(I prefer to purchase one that is calmer and easier to hold). I read on a web site that any Russian hamsters can live peacefully together, is this true? Also can she only mate with other Roboroski hamsters or can it be any Russian hamster? I know that Roborovski hamsters are naturally fast but is there anyway to train them be being touched or held for even a slight time?

Thank you!

I wasnt sure how to answer this one, as Im not sure if different dwarf speices would get along if same sex?

I strongly suggest not to intermingle species. Getting additions to same species animals to get along is hard enough. but in the wild, they wouldn't live among each other or with each other and it is highly unfair for us to force such a situation.

Besides the fact that it may turn out deadly.

I have seen others on other forums take this chance with success but I'm betting that it won't last long and if it does, it's a one in a million chance.

The person who emailed you should be given the 'lecture' on responsible husbandry, and research of the animal being purchased before they jump blindly and ignorantly into purchasing. Animals are not toys or means of amusement, but living creatures deserving of respect and dignity.

Well at lest they decided to ask someone who they thought would knows best about the issue, although I was pretty certain that it wasn’t a good idea to introduce different species I wasn’t sure how it would go for the same sex of different species housed together.

I will simply tell this person it’s not a good idea, I’m not going to give a lecture on it. I will refer them to the forum for any more questions they may have in the future.

Thanks for the info Joan

It's possible to lecture without coming across as lecturing....it's a skill I'm learning as I spend more and more time in practice

I would answer these questions:

Roborovskis are a social species, and this hamster should not have been bought singly. It is very important to research the husbandry of an animal before purchase, as after is usually too late. Introducing new hamsters can be tricky, but if this is a very young hamster and another very young hamster of the same sex can be found it may be worth attempting. Refer to forum to ask further questions on introducing hamsters.

I would only introduce another Robo of the same sex. They cannot breed with other russian species (they are a completely seperate species) but introducing a Campbell's or WW would be an incredibly bad idea and likely result in the death of the Robo. It would not be advisable at all.

It is possible to tame down Robos a bit so they are more handable but they are never going to be as cuddly-tame as other species of hamster. Again I would refer to forum to ask further questions on handling/taming Robos.

Well I already replied to the person, I did give a bit of a lecture in the end..

"I recommend that you do more research before purchasing an animal, I appreciate that you took the time to contact be about questions you were uncertain of. Please do some more research and look for a good book about dwarf hamsters. Further more you can register with the Hamster Central Forum for any other questions you may have, we would be happy to help you out. "

As well as answered the other questions best I good and thank to Joan who made some good comments.

I have an email forum on the contact page, people occasionally email me with questions about hamsters even though it tells them on the email form that the Forum would provide better answers.

See I would also have to say something too, the dwarf varieties are more demanding to look after, they are not all as commonly known as the Syrian so it's hard to pay for treatment for quite a few illnesses they can get, especially if you are not clued up about them. When I told Morag I'd take three Robos I was surprised to find that there is very little information available for them.

I would have to disagree that dwarf hamsters are more demanding than Syrians - Syrians as they live alone need human interaction every night ideally. Dwarf Hamsters provide company for each other so if you are out for the evening or busy with homework one night and only have time to feed them and check their water than that is alright. Costs at the vet are the same whatever species of small animal is being treated usually too. Plus I find dwarf hamsters hardier than Syrians. You are right though there is a total lack of decent information on the internet or even in books on Roborovski.
