Wheel + boarding question...
Hey everyone,
I'm going away on holidays next week and am leavin my hamster in to my local pet shop for boarding- they are really great in there, so I have no worries about her being in. However, we have a massive home made cage which we can't really transport. The shop needs them to come in in their own cage. Now, we have made a hybrid rotastak/ bin cage which is grand but she has a massive karlie wonderland wheel that no matter what we do can't fit any cage that is transportable. My question is if we give her back her old smaller rotastak wheel for 10 days, with loads of toys and climbing bits and pieces is that ok?

How big are the rotastak wheels? As long as they are at least 8" then it should be fine. Otherwise I would pick up a wheel that you can fit into the cage that it a bigger size. It doesn't need to be a quiet wheel because nobody will be sleeping near it

Depends how long you're away for really.
If it's just a weekend it's fine, but a week or more and i'd want to be sure my ham had all home comforts.

Yeah, it's for 10 days, so I want to make sure she has something to excercise on since i don't think she'll be out as much as I would here- she gets about an hour out free ranging most evenings... I think i'll see about getting a smaller but still big enough wheel.

Re: Wheel + boarding question...
Well I went to ye pet shop today and picked up a karlie 8in wheel, she's fine running on it, no back curling or anything- ages finding it a bit harder to move than her big wooden karlie wheel but that's ok. It's very strange seeing her in a smaller cage, she's so used to piles of space. She seems ok though, she has lots of new toys and hammocks to explore! I'm letting her settle in to the new cage so she doesn't get a huge jolt by me going away, her going into a pet shop for 2 weeks, AND having a new cage to deal with too!!! I'm already dreading being away for so long, and leaving her with relative strangers, even though I know how good they are and how well they treat their animals...

It's always hard to leave a pet behind when you go on holiday. I am sure your ham will still have fun and the petshop sound like they know what they are doing
