Diatomaceous earth is a good treatment for mites. I would use it externally and do not "puff" it out near the hamsters to breathe in. If they breathe in the dust, it could go badly, but if used carefully, it's fine.
When it's dry, it cuts the bodies of insects. It's such a fine dust that it doesn't hurt larger creatures on the outside. I use it to kill ants around my home, inside and out.
When you get into the store it comes in a "puffer" that squeezes out the dust powder, that's what you want to avoid your hamster breathing in. Take in another room your hamster doesn't go or outside and get a little bit of the earth on a spoon or scoop.
You'd want to just put a little tiny spot of it on, like with your pinkie or a qtip, if there is a bald spot or something that's a good place. The mites walk over the earth and get cut up and die. Once a week is probably enough, maybe two.
