Default *PLEASE look* Hamsters making noises? Is this normal? Active and well!

Hey guys,

Wow! Ever since I got my new Dextie, I have been running into issues. It seems like that issues always arise when it is finals time which makes it even harder. Maybe I am paranoid but I can't help it.

So this is the issue. A couple nights ago, I noticed my hamster making noises. I thought it was something in my sleep but then he made it again. I cannot describe the sound. It sounded something like a little growl or a purr. I got up right away to check up on him and he seemed to be all right and alert. He even spun in his wheel and was eating. No crust in eyes or any signs of sickness. He was active.

Then last night, I heard the sounds again. Sounds like a growl or purr. I got up right away to check and there he was doing his business like nothing was wrong. He is very responsive to things I do, bright eyes, drinks and eats and does everything. I even had to bring him to school (an hour) drive and he did very well with it.

I have read that hamsters are usually not supposed to make sounds but then I read that some do. This guy seems to be well otherwise and showing no signs of slowing down. I even checked for wet tail and his bum is dry. He is roughly only 8 weeks old.

Are some "hamsters" more vocal than others? Is this something dangerous? Is he just expressing an emotion?

Thanks guys.

I don't know quite know what noise that is, but I can confirm that some hams are more vocal than others

Sometimes hamsters squeak for random reasons.... most of the time mine squeak when they are in some sort of pain or feel threatened but I think some will squeak for other reasons, like when they are excited or happy, although I can't be sure!

Ok, now I am kinda of worried. It is 1:30 am here and it doesn't seem like Dextie is up to going in the wheel. He usually is at this time.

These sounds only happen when he is asleep. When he is awake, there are no noises.

He just let out this LOUD squeak that even shook me up as he slept. Today, it seems like all he cares about is sleeping and eating. He even pees where he sleeps. I thought they were supposed to pick a corner and pee only in that?

Physically, he looks well with no crusts in eyes or lumps or bruises and he is easy to get along with. He already lets me pick him up and pet him.

Could be just a lazy hamster? But I am not sure. Today he is not in the wheel when he usually is. Maybe an off day?

I mean I have only had him for a week. Could I be overlooking this?

Dusty my Syrian ocasionally makes sounds. He makes a clicking noise when he's excited and runs round and round. He'll make a chattering noise when he gets his food. The first day I had him he hurt his leg. He screamed blue murder. The next day it was as if nothing had ever happened.

My dwarf would make all sorts of noises when he was asleep. His little legs would run and he seemed to be eating or drinking sometimes.

As for him peeing in his bed, I'd take a bit of the soiled bedding and pop it in a corner. All mine have liked it on the same floor, but not next to, their beds. Dusty pops out of bed, uses his loo and then gets back into bed. If that works you can put a toilet there and some litter and go through the same process as before using soiled bedding. It took Dusty a week to catch on but of course some are quicker or slower than others. There are different potty litters so if he won't use his toilet just use a different litter.

Just be patient. xxx

When my hams were younger they often made sounds in their sleep,a light squeaking noise and even now I occasionally hear them squeak at toys if they have been annoyed by them in some way I've never heard of a hamster 'purring' though. When they are cross they make a screeching chattering noise rather than growling

As for not always using his wheel that isn't at all odd, after all you don't do the same things everyday do you? Neither do hams Hamsters being rodents also don't have bladder control so they can't get up to go and use the toilet if they are sleeping as it just 'falls' out They are more likely to use a corner to wee in when they are awake but not all do.

That noise is really common in baby hamsters. Like a sort of grating, creaky door noise? We think it sounds like they are 'crying' Aww. I'm sure it is just because they are not used to living alone and feel a bit insecure. The weeing in bed is also pretty normal in babies. They can't wear nappies after all
Once you hamster is a 'settled' hamster with a routine and he has everything set up how he likes it with a wee corner and nest things will likely even out and he will stop the baby things. Don't clean him out out too often as it loses his security scent.

souffle is right. If he`s new and hasn`t had time to settle he may be feeling stressed. You mentioned you took him to school? Why is that? Car journey`s can be stressful for a hamster. Cleaning their cage too often can be stressful, especially their nesting area as this is their little domain where they feel `safe`. I personally try not to over clean my cages because they never really become dirty as I spot clean each day and add-back a handful of substrate here and there where necessary.

The noises could well be as the other members have said since some hamsters are vocal, but adult syrians usually only growl if their sleep is disturbed. Young syrians I`m not sure about as my lad was 7 months old when I rescued him an even to this day, I never hear a peep out of him!

If your hearing these breathing noises when he`s asleep only and the noise sounds like a pattern, breathing in and out and the noise reflects the breaths, he could have a respiratory problem and need Baytril for a week or two. If his activity lessens, there is definately something a miss.

Thank you all SO MUCH for you advice. I am starting to think that maybe I am overthinking it.

His timing is a bit off. He slept for 2 days and nights but then at 9 am, I awoke to him running in his wheel. When I got up at 11:30 to go to class, he was still hard at it in his wheel. He was going very fast and intense.

Maybe he had an energy burst..?

And also, I got him a week ago so it is time for a cage clean. I did read about how you should be careful how you to clean to not stress the baby hamster out. I actually wanted to do a major scrub down because he sleeps in his own pee and he literally pees in almost every corner. It can't be too good for the guy either but at the same time I get that I shouldn't do it because of his scent and how on and off he is.

So maybe I should do the scrub down but put some of his old bedding back in? Do you think this is all right?

I really want to thank each and every single one of you. Means a lot. I was SOOO relieved to see him running around today!

Spot cleaning is best right now yes. Depending on the size of the cage, a smaller cage will get soiled quicker so will need more spot cleans than a larger cage. Always try to keep his nest the way it is and only remove half of his nesting material unless it is soaked in wee of course!

Hamsters feel more settled if they have familiar scent around them which is why whole cage cleans, especially with young, new or nervous hamsters isn`t a good idea. We see it a pee and smell, they see it as comfort and territory, so removing the whole thing can upset them. I never do full cage cleans now unless I have a very old or diabetic hamster as they will urinate much more. Keeping the cage clean but not spotless is the way to go.

If you allow your hamster plenty of time and give him his own space, he will appreciate it. Hamsters who are played with too much or disturbed can become unsettled and nippy. Your little one sounds as though he`s happy playing away in his wheel and getting to know you when he`s awake.
