Buttons and her nest
I am getting so stressed about Buttons open nest!
All my previous hamsters have slept in a bed before but Buttons seems to not want to use her cabin (which takes up half of one of the bin cages!) instead she just likes climbing it.
Anyway she took to sleeping in the first bin cage next to her sand box. I came home from sleeping at my BF's and she has moved her wheel forward (how I don't know, 12 inch one!) and is sleeping behind that.
I have no idea if this is to do with the fact that my mum tried to get her out but she freaked, she is SO friendly and will go to my mum if she is already out tho.
My question is, when I clean her cage out, where do I put the bedding? In the place she was sleeping for a few weeks or behind her wheel? :/
I used to just put it in her cabin but she doesn't seem to realise that she needs to make a bed before she is too tired so ends up falling asleep without any bedding and then making a nest the next day!

Re: Buttons and her nest
In all honesty, it doesn't matter where you put the bedding. She will move it to where ever she fancies. I put old bedding back in the cage (just a small amount) where Luna's nest was then put the new stuff at the front of the cage so that she can then move it to where she wants.

Starlight is right. You can put the bedding anywhere, and hams will move it until they find a comfy spot.

Re: Buttons and her nest
You're hamster will sleep where ever she is comfy and happy. I cover the entire bottom of my hamster's cages with bedding. Since Bonnie has taken to open nests too I will put a little extra in her sleep corner to get her nest started.

Re: Buttons and her nest
My hamster likes to switch between an open nest and his little house, he likes to kick the sawdust into the corner and then retrieves most of his bedding and puts it into his sawdust pile, but as others have said hamsters will decide where they want to sleep. And my hamster seems to enjoy creating his nest

Re: Buttons and her nest
I agree with what others have said too. None of mine will use any houses or cabins I provide. Magic has two entirely open nests - one for warmer days and one for cooler days and only goes into his house in order to clamber through the toilet roll inner that rests on the window ledge. Dinah sleeps in a burrow. Bear sleeps under a shelf in her tank. I faced up to their preference and bought each of them one of those fleecy donut bed things for Christmas - and all three of them have ignored them completely. I no longer bother about it and just replace bedding where they left it with a big pile in the middle of their cages so they can do what they want with it!

Re: Buttons and her nest
Percy doesn't care what I put in his house. He will make his next wherever HE wants it.

Re: Buttons and her nest
Yeah, Scamp bluntly refuses to sleep anywhere other than places she chooses lol
I tend to scatter her bedding everywhere until she sleeps somewhere ok and then encourage her to stay there, but she moves every few months so sleeping places I like won't last forever. Just have to leave them to it really...

Re: Buttons and her nest
Well my 2 syrians have set places to sleep and have never tried anywhere else
I scatter tons of loo paper all over there cages and they always go sleep in same spot.
Honey in her wooden hut and pixie under her guinea pig table. Both dark and enclosed spaces.

Re: Buttons and her nest
Thanks everyone!
I just worry because after I have cleaned her out she never makes a new nest so come 8am she is too tired so just sleeps in no bedding as she refuses to sleep in the nest I make her!
I will put bedding in a few places for her =)
