Honest advice needed
I've been without a hamster for a couple months and I've been trying to wait for a rehoming / adoption opportunity to come along but to no luck.
I'm from Ireland and I live hours away from any potential hamster breeders and there is rarely ever hamsters needing rehomed where I live or within an hour of where I live (which is the longest distance I could travel to adopt).
I really want a new hamster I've been so sad not having one. I've bought from pet stores in the past before I knew all about how bad it is buying pets from them...
I'm struggling between ignoring my morals and buying one from a store because I miss them so much or possibly waiting for many more months hoping a rehoming case comes up somewhere close
Any honest advice as to what you would do in this situation?

Re: Honest advice needed
Hello I think these are very strange times and difficult circumstances and my view on what you've said is - a hamster from a pet shop still needs a home right now - they don't live very long. You could maybe have a look in the adoption centre as those hamsters need rehoming the most x
I completely understand what you say about not wanting to support pet shops and possible bad breeding practices. But I think it's reasonable to compromise here with the current situation. Travelling long distance isn't particularly safe for you right now. And I also feel the need for another hamster after losing one - it helps you move on.
When I have been in this situation there never seem to be any rehoming options when I look - I think places like Gumtree are still very quiet. I travelled a long way just to adopt a hamster from a rescue last year as there was nothing close to me - but that was when the world was normal!
Assume you have a large pet store like Pets at Home nearby, and they do have an adoption section - go and get yourself a hamster - you will give them a good home x

Personally I would never buy from a shop, I would always adopt. But I do see where you are coming from and ultimatley only you know what you are happy living with.
Have you thought of putting adverts out there yourself on the 2nd hand sites saying you are looking to adopt a hamster.

I’m sorry you’re in this situation. I agree with Serendipity that pet store hamsters need homes as well. I think that because you have tried not to buy a pet store hammy, but there isn’t any available as well as with the Pandemic it isn’t safe to travel very far away, it really isn’t going against your morals. You are doing the best you can. I wish you luck and again I’m sorry you’re in this a situation

I've tried it's super hard in Ireland to get hamsters needing homes near me. They are all in Dublin which is many hours away from me and I don't drive so I wouldn't like to ask somebody to drive hours there and back. It really sucks but somehow always have bunnies and guinea pigs needing homes near me but never ever hamsters. I've always been looking even when I owned hamsters and never seen any.

Yes I've used there adoption section before! It's a really crappy time and it's been so hard to be in a lockdown with no furry friend thanks for the advice!

Good luck and let us know. Sometimes the ones at the pets at home adoption centre have been there for ages looking for a home. Just check they are healthy so no heartbreak.

Re: Honest advice needed
All my hamsters are from the pet shop, two i bought as babies and the others came from the adoption section.
In my opinion, all hamsters deserve a good life and a loving home, no matter where they come from.
They are living beings in need of a good home and its not their fault that they are up for sale in a pet shop.
Go out tomorrow and make a little hamster happy.

Re: Honest advice needed
The whole ethical thing - under normal circumstances - is that if people keep buying them from pet shops, then bad and illegal breeding will carry on to keep supplying the pet shops. It's a tricky one but the adoption centre is something else I think and not quite the same.

I think a pet store ham is fine if thats the only option. People are gonna keep buying from pet stores you not getting a ham is not gonna stop it plus they need homes too.
