Default Russian Dwarfs

I went in P@H with my mum today. They had some Russian Dwarfs in which had only just came on. OMG they were SO cute!
Anyway I asked to have a look at them as tomorrow I was going to go and get two.
The lady comes over and shows me them and I explain I have two of everything and she says 'I wouldn't have two together, I have been here for 5 years and always get some coming back as they have been fighting, they are horrible to each other' Then we heard a little squeak from the cage and they were fighting! =(

I thought they could be kept together?
Anyway she said Robo's are the only ones ok together. It was between Robos and Russians anyway as I want a pair but they don't get any in until Tuesday and can't get them until Thursday. I have been excited all week! =(
Kinda gutted but glad she was honest with me, i didn't believe her until I saw and heard them fighting.

Is it just because they are kept in big cages that people on here can keep them together?

Russians if you want cuddles. Robos certainly get along better but are not as often cuddly towards people.

I absolutely do not recommend pet store Russian (Campbell's or Winter White). 80% of them are very nippy and/or shy. Find a breeder willing to work with you. I have found father/son pairs or brothers tend to stay happiest together in the long-term

Good luck!

I think in pet shops they get there stock from rodent mills. I only found this out because of getting my dwarf Mandy.

I found out how they do it, they go onto a website when they need more stock & order the dwarfs by colour & type, robo, russian.

Now the dwarfs they have in the shop are not from the same litter so this is one of the reasons why they fight, national hamster breeders would only sell pairs of dwarfs from the same litter.

theer are some people who have had experiance of keeping two I have not so wont say any more but just thought I would say about pet shops xxx

Agree with everyone elses comments. Your best bet for a long lasting pairing with Russians is a breeder. When I asked my shop they were honest and told me the groups they have in cages are often non related. I had two campbells from a breeder who lived together happily until one passed away. My current Russian is from pets at home and lives on her own. I do also have a winter white who was from a breeder and was attacked by her siblings. She ended up losing part of her ear. So even with the best breeding sometimes pairs or groups just dont work. Other times they do with fantastic success. Sam and Laurarodentfink would be great people to talk to. They both keep four dwarfs together

Thanks for the advice everyone
I was thinking of a breeder but i can't afford to travel far at all and can't find any breeders in my area - Northampton - Corby, Kettering area
And tbh I don't want to wait months (the chance of a breeder in the same town having robos?)
I love the robos as much as the Russians so I will just wait until next week + keep an eye on the adoption centre at p@h as if they get any as I am wanting to adopt more than get them from there.

Russians are more cuddly? I didn't know that. I do want to be able to hold them etc. So are Russians better to get if I want to be able tame?

Yeah they are. I never managed to tame my Robo! I have only had the one though. I am sure there are some lovely snuggly robos out their. But my Gizmo was not one of them. Someone who has kept them longer than me will be able to give you some advice. If you look in the robo section in the forum I am sure there will be threads on taming there .

Ahh now I don't know what to do.
I can't get this little Russian out of my mind but I got a HUGE cage (110L) and two wheels, two beds etc but I want to be able to tame my hamster :/

I think they both become tame but Robo's don't stay still for long where a Russian will sit sometimes & just be with you if that makes sence lol

The nearest breeder would be tufftyfluff who is in Borehamwood, she breeds Campbells & Pearl coloured WW's. She always seems to have some ready to go or are in the nests lol

To be honest, as the others have said, main stock comes from rodent mills, and are generally unrelated or cousins etc at best so will likely fight.

I'm on a complete boycott of pet shop purchased animals, and again think to get a healthy duo - you really should re-consider on the breeder, i mean having a happy couplet is something worth waiting for....

but if you cannot go to a breeder, i'm glad your considering rescuing - even from P@H adoption section - those guys also need a loving home.

I really can't justify going that far tbh to get a breeder hamster.
I got Buttons from there and she is the LOVELIEST hamster ever!!
She basically runs to my hand to come out and loves to be out, she is so friendly.
My boyfriend and parents are only just letting me get another hamster (or 2) so to travel for an hour and half. I just can't afford that on petrol.
I think the guys in p@h deserve as good home as any of them =(

Would a Russian be lonely on their own?
I know they are only fighting but would feel mean :/
