Re: Saying goodbye to baby hamsters :(
I had someone email me wanting a hammy for their five year old. I told them I didn't think it would be a good match if they wanted a hamster who held still. No way are these babies going tO be lap pets. They are sweet, but always on the go. I offered to let her come meet them if she wanted. Am I being to picky?

NO!! you really are not, it is your responsibility to ensure these hams get lifelong good homes, and i really think your being the right amount of picky - i mean what would happen to the ham when the 5 year old got bored because it couldn't hold it? sure the mom may clean it, feed it and water it - but it wouldn't get attention or affection.
If the woman had wanted one for HER and her 5 year old and mentioned she will be giving it attention daily without the 5yo and the 5yo was going to watch it and learn proper animal care then that would be a different story.
Trust your gut instincts

Re: Saying goodbye to baby hamsters :(
You can't be too picky with these owners.
I'd never rehome anything to the first home to turn up just because it'd turned up, even if that home was the only one likely to show up for six months.
You should be making sure they all go to great homes, preferably in same sex pairs, and you'll be doing that.
"oh my five year old wants one" is highly likely to turn into "does anyone want a hamster? my kid got bored of it" later.

Agree x1000000.
Since I'm in your area, do you want me to see if any of my pet-loving, responsible friends would be interested?

That would be wonderful if you could I'm already starting to try and think of names for them, when that happens they normally end up staying I will know their sexes next week. I have a vet appointment tuesday. I actually go to Westminster for my vet. There are so few good small animal vets in the area! Nobody I know wants hammies. My niece wanted one but she had to talk to her dad first. She is 12 so I know she would take good care of it. But I don't think her dad will let her have one. These babies are sooo spoiled. A few of them have learned how to beg. But momma is still defensive and nippy. Once the babies are weaned/ rehomed I am going to work with her and the father. Biting me is not acceptable

Re: Saying goodbye to baby hamsters :(
I'll see if I know anybody who is interested. Do you take them to "Feathers, Scales, and Tails" in Westminster? When my ham was sick, I took him to an emergency vet who referred me to FS&T for his follow up. I ended up going somewhere closer, but I've heard FS&T is excellent

Yes, I go to Feathers Scales and Tails. Dr. Ryan is excellent. His coworker is good as well. They is are understanding of my financial situation (I'm currently unemployed) I have been going there since my 13 year old dog was a puppy. They sees cats/dogs and small animals. Its just so much easier to have all of my vet files in one place! They took care of my mom's hamster Calli when she broke her teeth as well as my little girl Whisper before she passed on. They sent me sympathy cards in both cases. Dr. Bowels will be sexing my hamsters for me. I would rather pay the vet than take my chances of being wrong and ending up with more babies.

Sorry... ummm i really do agree with alot of people that have posted and as i said it will be very hard experience for you but you can't keep all the babies because as you said it will be to hard etc.. maybe you should keep in contact with the person that is buying the hamster or hamsters and ask him to give you updates i think thats a good idea to just have some updates off the person and it may make you feel better!

Re: Saying goodbye to baby hamsters :(
I know how you feel!! I had a few sleepless nights worrying about my friend's hamsters' babies that I had in my care for a couple of weeks. I saw them grow up from ~20 days old and when the time came to part with them, I felt much better to entrust them to a friend who runs a wonderful hamster shelter, and I was able to keep two (and my friend kept one). I still feel a big knot in my chest every time I look at photos of the little ones we did not keep or hear about someone else's feedback of those who adopted our furries (they've all been adopted now). Everyone was very impressed how friendly and tame our babies were, and they went to good homes, so I calm myself with those thoughts.

Re: Saying goodbye to baby hamsters :(
I may have a home for some babies. One of my old coworkers is interested for her grandson. She is very knowledgeable and grew up with hamsters. I was showing her pictures of the babies and she was interested in my silky baby I have had two people who were interested in him so far, lol. I have to keep saying he isn't for adoption. He seems to be so popular!
