These are the ones I can remember off the top of my head or have written down on my current computer but there are a number I’m sure I have missed/can’t find the records for. I’ve kept hamsters since I was around 7 so about 18 years worth of ages and causes of death to forget. Most of these are within the last 8 years.

Male Syrians
Albert – 37 months – old age
Harold – 28 months – old age
Otis – 2.5 months – wet tail
Tazler - 29 months – old age
Shelley – 15 months – cushings. PTS
Derrek - 23 months – old age
Patrick - 19 months – tumour. PTS
Mike – 2.5 months – wet tail
Gambit - 21 months – old age
Wilson - 10 months – treated for mild case of mites, improving until sudden death
Magnus – 2.5 months – sudden death, cause unknown (only had him a few days)
Joey - 9 months – sudden death, cause unknown

Female Bred Syrians
Puffball – 41 months – old age
Bear - 5 months - died 5 days after giving birth to 13 babies who were then successfully handraised
Coco - 30 months - old age
Gobbles – 26 months – old age
Gavin - 28 months - old age
Floss - 23 months - probable old age
Baloo - 26 months – old age
Petrina - 30 months – old age
Frost – 23 months – closed pyometra, PTS
Willow – 18 months – sudden death, cause unknown
Evie - 15 months – heart condition (only presented at 13 months or she wouldn’t have been bred)
Ava - 15 months – unknown neurological problem/possible epilepsy (Sudden onset, Vet unsure of exact cause) PTS
Emily - 30 months – closed pyometra, PTS
Nora – 18 months – series of strokes after an escape. Recovered from the first, but then had a second a week later. Improved the next day until a third stroke that morning. PTS

Female Unbred Syrians
Fluff – 24 months – old age (died on her birthday)
Pudding - 19 months - sudden death. cause unknown
Nina - 14 months - sudden death. cause unknown
Gypsy - 5 months – open pyometra, vet wouldn’t operate. PTS
Florence - 5 months - sudden death, unknown cause
Nessa – 7 months – autopsy states sudden cardiac arrest with no cause
Eydis - 10 months – suspected pyometra, surgery revealed an inoperable mass in her bowel. PTS

Male Campbells
Pookie – 39 months - old age
Pepsi – 32 months – old age

Female Bred Campbells
Tyzer – 58 months – Tumour. PTS

Female Unbred Campbells
Cookie – 34 months – old age
Tango -35 months - old age
Fanta - 37 months - old age

Male Winter Whites
Fry – 22 months – sudden death, cause unknown
Rudy – 25 months – possible old age
Bruce – 15 months – sudden death, cause unknown

Bred Female Winter Whites
Leela – 23 months - sudden death, cause unknown. (Lost Fry & Leela the same day despite being in separate cages. No symptoms the day before and other hamsters unaffected)
Sheila – 39 months – old age
Beryl – 32 months – old age
Ludo – 23 months – Sudden death, cause unknown

Male Hybrids
Chester – 38 months - old age

It would be interesting to go through this whole thread and turn it into a graph (something to do in my free time!).

Did a quick run through of the numbers for syrians and worked out the average lifespan of males and females (as a group, unbred and bred). If it was not mentioned whether or not they were bred, I assumed unbred so there was a lot less data for the bred females.

On average it seems males live a few months longer than females but there’s not a lot in it. Interestingly, the hamsters with the maximum lifespans (5-7) were females. Bred females would also appear to live longer than unbred but that’s probably due to less data. I also calculated the percentage of deaths due to pyometra, again I think the bred females is high due to the small amount of data.

Average Male Lifespan
– 24.5 months
Average Female Lifespan (regardless of breeding) – 22.7 (11% Pyometra)
Average Unbred Female Lifespan – 22.6 months (10% Pyometra)
Average Bred Female Lifespan – 23.3 months (22% Pyometra)

My statistics seem to differ slightly to Bekki2308’s. This could be due to additional data since her analysis, differences in which data was excluded and possibly some rounding of the numbers.

So, a friend of mine told me that she has had Syrians that have lived to be 5. I tried to call BS but she stood her ground? Possible?

I am so, so sorry for your loss

To add some data, I had my male djungarian ham for about 15 months. I adopted him as an adult.. so I have no idea how old he was. The death seemed sudden.. so symptoms at all.
