Re: How long do they live?
Tilly was a female syrian hamster bought from the local pet shop and she lived to around 2 and a half. I miss her a lot <3

I'm assuming you meant Russian, unless there's a new species of hamster I'm not aware of

Re: How long do they live?
Here are some species graphs. I wasn't sure if to group all the dwarf species' together, so Ive done them separate for now, and not included those which didn't specify what particular species of dwarf.
Again I have shown them by age bracket, and a % of the total for that particular species.

Re: How long do they live?
I did the bit I was interested in which was seeing if there was a difference between mean lifespan of male and female Syrians. Given how uncontrolled and unscientific this study is the exact mean age and percentage values for illnesses are only a guestimate really but it is still interesting to see how often Pyo is a cause of passing in hams , especially when all other illnesses appear in similar percentages in males and females. I will do some stats on the age range of the hams later but for now a mean will do me just fine. Only posts where syrian, age, gender etc were specified have been used.
mean female = 24 months
main illnesses leading to passing:
17% Pyometra
8.5% Tumour
5% Wet tail
5% Stroke
5% Other illness (heart failure, bowel problems, URI etc)
3% Cushings
Remaining 56.5% had no stated illness (uknown, accidental death, "old age" or no information)
mean male = 25 months
main illnesses leading to passing:
11% Tumour
6.5% Wet tail
5% Other illness (heart failure, bowel problems, URI etc)
3% Stroke
1% Cushings
Remaining 73.5% had no stated illness (unknown, accidental death, "old age" or no information)

Re: How long do they live?
Volti - 1 month~ish - Male, Syrian, wet tail.
Tres - 5 months, female, syrian, infection from open wound.
Silica - 8 months, female longhair syrian, tumors.
Arhi - Not sure on her age, female syrian. I had her for a year and a half and she passed from what appeared to be old age, she wasn't suffering at all when she passed.
My old hamster from when I was little was a Russain named Oreo and he lived to be a year and a half or so old.
All my current pets are a year and a half or older minus Asami who is 6 months.

Re: How long do they live?
Hi,
I only have my freddy, bred by my mum, but I asked her and she said in her experience males tend to live 3 years, and females average 2 years, regardless as to whether they have had litters. My mum has experience of both as she only lets them have babies if they are happy hams. She did say she finds the grumpy ones tend to live just less than 2 years, she doesn't know if this is because they are lonely, or if it is hormone related, or if they are grumpy because of something we can't see that causes them pain. My cousin has one of my mums hams which was a boy and he is 3years 2 months old, and still going strong!
