Breeder hams..
Since my beloved Pie's passed away, I've been thinking about getting a hamster from a breeder. I've had petshop hamsters before, and with the exeption of Pie and two winter whites, they've all been evil.. Well, not evil, but hard to tame, and have had problems like with Sam's water bottle chewing.. I also don't like the way that they're raised, and shipped and stuff..
Anyways, I'm NOT looking to replace Pie, just to make that clear.
So, i've never had a hamster from a breeder before, and i was just wondering how much i could expect to pay, and the usual stuff like that..

I'm sure nobody would ever think you were thinking of replacing Pie, Nicola - we all know, if you've loved and lost a pet, then there's no replacing them. Giving a home to a new little friend, whilst remembering the one you've lost, seems like a good thing to do to me - everyone is different.
Anyway whereabouts are you, roughly? I've had hamsters from several of the really successful show breeders (based in Manchester, Hampshire, Bath and Newcastle). They all cost five pounds each - the same/less than a pet shop hamster. I'd be happy to put you in touch with any of them if you are near them.
Is it a Syrian you are thinking of? If you are interested in how they are raised and how the breeders hamsters are kept, I know that Basia (Hereford) and Spud's Mum (Lincolnshire) are both planning litters for this spring - you could look at their websites, if you don't mind waiting a couple of months. I'm also planning a litter but they won't be ready until late March/early April - I know I'd be delighted if any of my babies went to someone like you!
Good luck finding your new hamster.

I'm currently at college in Winchester, but, I live in Hartlepool. I wouldn't be looking to get another little one until I've finished college in the summer, so, it'd be quite a while away!
I would indeed be looking for a syrian, I love my dwarfs, but, I don't think i could ever be without a syrian..
Thank you for your help

Get back to us as soon as you have decided the time is right Nicola and I am sure someone on the forum will have some gorgeous babies. We hope to maybe breed Napoleon in the summer so it may be us! We are near Huddersfield so not too far off really. Bye the way do you play the piccolo?

Nope, I don't. If your wondering where my username came from, it's a nickname a friend gave me when I was a kid.

Nicola, when you are in Winchester you are very near Bourne Valley - they are in Andover. My Toby (Toblerone) comes from there and Bunsey's Oscar is his brother - they were both incredibly tame and quiet and lovely when we got them and I don't think either of us had to actually do anything to get them used to us! Sue has litters throughout the year as well.

Ah-ha! I take it there's a new little lady coming to you then?
How exciting - I'm hoping to mate Smartie and Gill and Teresa may well mate Cara and Bronte ...and now Nappy may well become a dad, how weird that all seems when it seems like only five minutes ago the Carapaws were all babies!

Ohoh - I feel lots more breeding diaries coming in 2008!
How exciting! especially if 3 of the Carapaws make Paws and Caramel grandparents!
Now Red would certainly be able to tease Paws about that
