Smile New Hamster

Hi guys,

After my Syrian hamster passed away last week I have just gotten a new one two days ago. My previous Syrian was 7 months old when I got her and she was never handled.
When I got her I was able to tame her so that I could pet her and she'd take treats from my hand (got bitten once) but that was as far as we got.
My new hamster is young (they said she's only been taken away from the mother recently) and I've been able to pet her and give her food from my hand but I'm afraid to pick her up
I've let her settle in the past 2 days and she's been looking at me through the bars and I've put a few things into her cage (wheel, tunnel, edible house, cardboard box, tissue for bedding, chew thing) I have more wooden toys and tunnels for her but I need to sterilize them. I was wondering if you guys have any tips for me to be less afraid and to get her used to me holding her.

Hey there,

I've had my Syrian for just a few weeks and this has been my experience so far-

Syrians are incredibly mild and sweet creatures. A lot more calm and slow, as compared to my gerbils at least. My Syrian, Pip, was incredibly easy to tame. This might not be the case with yours, but I do know that when they are very young, as mine is, they are incredibly easy to tame.

I began with, after letting him settle in, offering him food from my hand (this little boy loves peanuts like none other!) and petting him occasionally. He isn't one to run away from my hand so when I scooped him up for the first time, he gladly accepted and after initially giving my hands a full inspection with his whiskers, gave my a very light and relatively painless nip that didn't draw any blood, and was fine from then on. We're really good friends now. I've just been working with him for a little bit every day, usually in the late evening after I get home from work.

I recommend just working with your little girl a little bit every day, and try not to be afraid. I was initially afraid of Pip because my gerbils are in the habit of biting me quite often so I was assuming that it was the same case, but it really isn't. Each little animal is different and will respond to you differently. Don't be afraid if she nips you at first. This is simply her testing your hand out to see if you are food or not. Most of the time, hamsters will learn to recognize your scent and remember that it's you, as long as you have clean, unscented hands when you go to handle them.

Good luck with your little gal, and keep us updated with pictures as well!

Congrats on your new ham.
If you've only had her a few days or so then just take your time, if you're nervous about picking her up she will sense that & it can make things harder for both of you so just try to relax around her & not rush things.
If she's already taking food from your hand that's great, she will probably soon just walk onto your hand which is the first step, once she's done that a few times you can try just very gently & slowly raising your hand a little gradually increasing the time & height that you lift her (not too high though!) then you can try just putting your hands under her & scooping her up, one step at a time & I'm sure you'll do just fine.
