Should I own another hamster?
My mum said that because Coco died, she'd be willing to buy me another one as soon as we settle in Canada, but she said because I couldn't take Coco dying and I was crying all the time that it would be wise for me not to own another because it'll just die and then the next one will die and the next one and etc.
But I love hamsters sooooooooooo much but I don't like the dying part so should I own one or not?

Experiencing your pet dying is always hard. But the world needs good hamster owners and knowing that you are giving another little hamster a good home for its lifespan, is of great comfort too.
Unfortunately, these little ones don't live as long as we would like them to. But at least we can give them a happy and loving home.
I would say go for it.. and make another hamster happy to be in your care.

Re: Should I own another hamster?
My OH and family said the same thing to me after I lost Gloria. I chose to get two more hamsters since then. You have to choose what's right for you. It's always unfortunate to lose a loved one, but after the healing process you are left with all the great memories of your pet.
I'm going to guess you will get a lot of encouragement from HC to get another hamster, and I would also vote yes, but you have to do what's right for you.
<3 Hope you aren't still hurting too much from losing Coco

Re: Should I own another hamster?
My Mum and Dad both said that to me, because I was absolutely devasted when I lost Snickers and Buddy. They eventually gave in because my way of coping is to pass my love on to another animal. Plus I was in Pets At Home looking at the adoptions and they couldn't really say no (which is lucky because I pretty much saved Bailey's life).
Maybe just give it some time to see how you feel and what your way of coping would be. xx

Re: Should I own another hamster?
it's probably just down to how you feel; it is normal that the loss of Coco would make you very upset soon afterwards, but if you are able to come to terms with it after some time has passed, and feel ready to love another hammie, then i would say follow your heart. It is the love we share with our furries that makes it worthwile to endure the heartache when they leave us.

Re: Should I own another hamster?
Losing a pet is hard, I have lost quite a few hamsters and each was upsetting. After Teddy died I said I did'nt want to own another hamster, it was actually my mother that missed having a hamster and bought me Ruby. Although looking back I am greatful for that because they are wonderful little creatures and I don't think I could live without one
If you want one when you are in Canada and your mother feels better about it then I don't see why you should'nt get one!

Re: Should I own another hamster?
The loss of anything is hard to bear, especially of something you love, such as your pet hamster. I just lost mine a few hours ago, and my familys response was "why do you get disposable pets then?", so I defiantly understand how you feel, and I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had 8 hamsters throughout my life and am planning on getting a 9th because even though it hurts when they pass on, I know I'll be able to take care of another one and make it as happy as it can be, and I'm sure you can do the same.

Re: Should I own another hamster?
My family have said the same to me. I get so upset when any of my animals pass away they tell me to not get any more as I'll just be upset when they go too.
But our animals are a big part of our lives and it's normal to be upset when they die.
Also crying when they pass means you cared about them very much.

Re: Should I own another hamster?
It's really up to how you feel on the matter. Growing up I've always had pets, my cats being some of the pets I've always bonded the best with. My cat Babe who I had from longer than I can remember till I was 15-16ish passed from old age, I told my dad that I wanted to get another cat almost right away, I just couldnt cope without having that snuggly little furball. I don't regret that decision for a moment. That was how I ended up with my Shadow, who I only had for about 6 years before we had to have her put down due to horrible cancer. I guess the point I'm getting at is that my pets have always seemed to have come to me in times where I was hurting the most (even Cal and my Hammies have been helping through a pretty bad point in my life). Only you know when your ready for another little one in your life

Re: Should I own another hamster?
I have had animals my whole life and usually it was for their whole life too so I got used to losing beloved pets which although devestating it has made me much stronger to death in animals. Of course I still cry when I lose a pet and miss them endlessly but experience has made me greatful for the time that I did get with them. Getting a new pet does make things easier and many people feel mean admitting this but it is true and people shouldnt be ashamed of it, if you lose a loved pet the best thing to do is to get another. They help you with healing and making new bonds is very healthy when going through times of loss or depression and trust me here you will never ever forget your past pets especially the ones you were closest too.
Basically what I am saying is yes you should get another Pets may leave us in body but we all know they never ever leave us in spirit, memories or in our hearts.
