| Male vs Female Just a little question Do you all have any peferences when it comes to gender? Female ham, Male ham? If so, why? And is there any small differences in behavior, the taming process etc? |

| Re: Male vs Female I've only ever had male hamsters so far. Not out of choice though! My hammies are all rescues so I just get what's available and it's always been males.
My mum has female hamsters though and I see no difference in any of their behaviour. I guess it all just depends on the hammy and how it's looked after.
A guy in a pet shop once told me female hamsters are more active than males but I've not found this to be true. |

| Re: Male vs Female I have a slight preference for males myself. I find them just a little more laid back and calmer. They smell nicer and I don't know why they just look different to me!!
That's not to say I don't love my girlies dearly but given a choice I would likely choose a boy

| Re: Male vs Female My own preference is for male hamsters. My main reason for prefering males is probably because females can suffer from endometrial issues (pyometra) and sometimes be more hormonal than males. So that is one reason I don`t keep female hamsters. I love the character of the male but they do say the females can be more active and larger than the males. But I don`t mind big laid back sleepy males!

| Re: Male vs Female I do have a softer spot for males (hence why mine all are)
Both the females I've had have been very loopy but lovely all the same.
But also, I wouldn't like a female Syrian as I worry it would get my male all worked up.
I do want a little girl to spoil and dote on like a little princess again though x |

| Re: Male vs Female Out of the hamsters I've had I have to say female.
Snickers (Syrian) was a complete fruit loop at times but she always wanted to be with me, either on my shoulder or on my lap. She'd always beg to come out and spent most of her time zooming about!
Cooper (Syrian) is sooo laid back and very docile. He's shy at times and easily scared. He enjoys cuddles but he doesn't come to me, I'll have to pick him up. He's very lazy and the complete opposite to Snickers.
Oscar (Winter White) has quite an attitude, he'll get the hump if I move anything in his cage and being a typical short man he likes to make his presence known. He's a cuddly little thing when out of his cage though and lazy!
Bailey (Chinese) hasn't had the best life so far so I can't blame him for his biting habits. He's very cheeky and enjoys running about and digging. Also a lazy boy!
It depends what you are looking for in a hamster. If you want a lazy ham or a hyper ham.

| Re: Male vs Female All of of my hams are female, and I didn't have much of a choice there too -- that's just who was available. So I can't really compare personalities, but my girls seem great. Also, I don't think I like the um, male parts on some hamsters, like syrians and chinese. But I feel that for winter whites, this anatomic difference causes that super cute chubster pose, which my female WW doesn't do the same way (her back feet don't go up in the air like the male chubster photos I've seen here).
I've thought about my next hamster, and I don't think I'll have a preference on sex if it will be a dwarf.

| Re: Male vs Female Me and my partner have decided we prefer boys. We have one boy at the moment but have had two girls and they were totally loopy.
Our boy Rogan is just so laid back.

| Re: Male vs Female I think it depends on the individual hamsters personality, some times boys are better some times girls are better. I think it has a lot to do with how they are bred, and also how they are looked after after all a animal is what you make it the more time you put in the more you get back

| Re: Male vs Female I don't have a preference at all. I never noticed too much in a difference between genders. It has always seemed to depend on the individual.
