Male vs Female

So far I've had 2 female chinese dwarf hammies, very laid back and no trouble at all, but we saw very little of them, they just wanted to do their own thing.
We now have a female syrian and she sure is loopy, I wasn't prepared for the difference in how active she was, she's lovely though and we certainly see lots of her.
Never had a male, thats not to say we won't in the future though.

I have a preference for girl winter whites and campbells
and a preference for boy syrians

I've only had one girl, Rin. I prefer boys, syrian boys not for personality but because I like long haired hammies so having a proper skirt on a syrian is awesome. XD

If it's a long haired, I tend to prefer females, just because I absolutely adore how puffy they look. I don't tend to be all that big on the skirts, although I have slowly learned to love them. X3 Personality wise, however, I am pretty alright with any. I have had many different personalities on both genders, from eternally rowdy and fierce Shippo (a male) to very calm, sweet and collected Luna (female). All in all, I love both, and would not hesitate on gender to have my pick. XD

I have always had the best experience with my male hamsters. They have always just been more calm than my females. I love my females when I do have them, but I prefer the calmness I've had in males. :]

I too have had both, and never specifically chosen gender, and have to say I have no preference, they have all had different personalities and to be honest I've never really thought about them acting a particular way because of gender. My female hybrid dwarf was a total nutster while her brother was the most laid back, lazy hamster I've known! My chinese girl was very whizzy but then, that's a chinese for you! My previous 2 syrians were female and actually quite laid back and my current 2 syrians are male and also easy going and calm ....... well Fred is a big girl's blouse but he's certainly not what you'd call active.....unless running around on our bed! Hugo just seems to plod along and takes life as it comes, happy to amuse himself in his cage or to explore when he is out. My 3 robos were boys but I didn't get the chance to get to know them properly but they were super hyper! I think next time I get a chinese I shall try to get a female simply because that's what Mouse was and I so totally adored her.

So female Syrians are typically more loopy? By loopy, I take it you mean they're hyper, tend to run around in circles and want a lot of attention?

I've had both male and female syrians. One of my males was very laid back whilst the other was a nutter! My female is very curious and active, but she has days where shes abit more lazy. I honestly dont think there is a gender based difference. I purely believe its totally down to their own individual personality.

I prefer Females. I have found they smell less and are more active. My males have been lazy really.
So females for me
