Default Hammy Has Escaped...

Don't know how or when. Never thought I'd have to learn all about escapism so soon but there you go.

I don't think that Aidan has had anything to do with this as he was in bed when I put Hammy back in his cage for the last time last night...and if he'd sneaked downstairs I would have known about it. I'm sure I secured the lid when I settled Hammy.

I just happened to notice that the cage was empty when I checked on Hammy at about midnight. I can't even say for sure whether the lid was open when I got to the cage.

I'm absolutely frantic. I've hunted high and low. There's no sound to assist in locating his whereabouts so I suspect he's fallen asleep somewhere. I'm sure he must be downstairs as he couldn't negotiate the stairs when I was playing with him on the staircase last night.

I've emptied my cupboard under the stairs and there was no sign of him. The rest of the house has been trashed in the hope that I'd find him, but to no avail.

I left my mop bucket in the kitchen unemptied as I mopped the kitchen floor last night and I was worried that he may have been able to climb up and fall in...it took me ages to pluck up the courage to empty it but when I did it was hamsterless, thank goodness. I will never make that mistake again I can tell you.

Anyway I've set a bucket trap complete with a staircase made out of books plus food trail, put his cage on the floor with food and water and I've put saucers of seeds and other tit-bits in the other rooms in the hope of tempting him out of his hidey hole and now I'm going to try and sleep and see what "later" brings.

One thing's for sure, Hammy cannot possibly have got outside so at least I know he's inside the house somewhere.

Sleep is not going to come easily but at least I'll rest if I'm in bed. I'll be up and down like a yo-yo for the rest of the night, hoping that Hammy's returned to us.

Will let you all know what develops.

I can hear noises above my kitchen ceiling...scratting noises...never heard them before...there's no sign of Hammy upstairs...my bathroom is above my kitchen...if he can climb up high then he could have got up there through the top of the cupboard under the stairs...there's no other way. And I don't think that there's any way I can get access up there. Maybe under the floorboards upstairs. I think I'll have to phone my brother first thing and get him round here to help me.

Does anyone know if hammies can climb the height of a room?

I think that Hammy will have to have a padlock on his cage, just to make sure that there's no repetition...if he comes back or we manage to find him that is.

I'm pretty sure Hammy has managed to get himself above my kitchen ceiling so I've sent an sos to my brother in the hope that he'll help me when he wakes up and as soon as my next door neighbour stirs I'll call upon him to assist. Hope they aren't planning on having lie-ins!

I just hope my ceiling doesn't cave in

Hurrah...bit of success...left a saucer of tit-bits in my study upstairs and the sneaky little fella has been to it and wiped it clean while I was downstairs boiling an egg to add to it!

So I'm off on the prowl again in the hope that I can find him doing the same thing in one of the bedrooms.

Hammies do sure keep you on your toes!

Keep taking deep breaths Jill and keep your cool..........

Checked the bedrooms and no bait has yet been taken but I feel sure he's upstairs somewhere. I've come to the conclusion that he must have climbed all the way up the stairs. It keeps going quiet so he must be taking little hamster naps. During the silences I keep thinking that I'll grab 40 winks myself but then the noises start up again. You'd think it would be easy pinpointing the source of the noise but I can assure you that it isn't and it must be worse trying to do that during the day with all the daytime noise to have to blot out.

I'm as large as life...tsk...pesky little Hammy!

Hopefully I'll grab some sleep at some point today and I'll have to ask my mum to watch Aidan for a bit. He's just woke up and when I told him about Hammy having emptied one saucer of food he said "Well that's good news mum cos it means that he's around somewhere doesn't it?" Then he went back to bed and fell asleep straight away.

I've calmed down a bit now and I know that my neighbours will come round en masse to help with the mission to find Hammy. It will be harder during the day though as I bet he conks out somewhere and so will be "noiseless". It might be better to leave it til this evening.

I wish he would squeak or something...do hamsters do that or are they always quiet? I've never heard a peep out of him since he came...except the noise from bar chewing that is!

I can't even find a trail of droppings to help me.

Well I'll take another look around and see what's what.

Good news folks...Hammy returned at 6.30am...he came in with the milk as they say round here...I think he's been nightclubbing myself...although he didn't have a lady friend with him but hey it's late so maybe he's walked her home and well...you know...one thing led to another and they had a little hamster romance He certainly has a twinkle in his eye and is full of beans

I posted that last post then not long afterwards I turned around and there he was, tucking into the boiled egg pieces that I'd left out to trap him. He scurried off like greased lightning when I went to pick him up so I had to chase him along the landing and he leapt up quite a high step to get away from me so he obviously enjoyed his taste of freedom!

I think that Hammy had got all cosy in the vicinity of my laundry basket as he tried to go back down the side of it when I approached him...there is hardly any gap there as it stands in the corner of the room where the walls join but I'm sure he'd found a way to get behind it as there is a bit of space there...Houdini Hammy then eh?

I was so relieved to see him that I put some more of the egg and fruit and veg in the cage and he devoured it so his shenanigans must have left him ravenous, but he hasn't really eaten much since he came so I'll let him off just this once. He tipped the entire contents of his food bowl into his bed so he'll be having a hearty breakfast at this very mo no doubt!

As for the cage it's now got a heavy book positioned over the catch and later today I will purchase a small padlock from Wilko's to ensure, as a precautionary measure, that Aidan can't get into it without supervision and Hammy can't get out without permission. Sorted!

And now I'm off to bed.

What a night that turned out to be

Thank heavens for that. So glad we had a happy ending. My heart was racing there! Hamsters are amazing escape artists. I doubt they can open the catch on a Gabber so more likely human error there. Do you have the sdeclips on the tray Jill. If not put them on. Once we left it so the top and tray were slightly offset and Sonni got out. She was found sitting on the bed looking cheery even through we had totally emptied the room and looked everywhere. I have no idea where she was hiding but they usually come out for food sooner or later and we find the sit and wait policy best. Watch out with a padlock as it he CAN open the door by any chance then he will still get out as the padlick will still allow enough give to push open. We use a clothes peg which works well. I will post a pic soon. One of the plastic ones. Do you get Hammy out using the little door or do you take the whole wire lid off? I would not advise taking the whole wire off too much as it could get loose. Better to loose the side clips and lift the whole plastic lid off so that you can have easy access to the tray. I am so glad he is found. Why not write a story for creative corner about your feelings? I think you will find that hammy did climb the stairs. They are very good at it and indeed very quick. At night shut the door of the hammy room and to any rooms that have holes which would give access to the underfloor areas eg bathroom. Once under the floor they are very hard to find and seem to get lost so even food will not tempt them out. Make sure you remove lots of fresh food from the nest store so it des not go bad and give him a bad tummy. Just a little bit the size of a pinky nail per day is fine. He will be eating plenty. You can start a growth chart weighing on the kitchen scales. That will be fun for Aiden to make.

So do we, on the doors of the wire cages that Treacle and Custard are in. They just seemed so loose when we got them I didn't want to risk it. Mocha has a tube adapter in place of the little door in his Lux, it's a tight fit so I'm hoping for the best.

*rubs sleepy eyes* Wow, lol Its the morning here and I've just woken up gotten myself and smoo some hot chocolate and sat down to read whats going on at hamster central. This was quite a long and nervous adventure to read for still feeling half asleep! Still I was worried so I read through all six posts you made and every detail! I admit to a sign of a relief when I saw the wrods "Good news folks"

It must have been an awful feeling knowing your hamster was loose, and not even having had him home that long! Still you were very good natured about it, at least it seemed that way from how you wrote about it hehe

I'm sure Hammy will sleep quite a bit after his big adventure. Its funny how when they escape after even a minute of freedom they act like they have turned wild and suddenly go from these waddle pudgy hams to these lean running machines who manage to navigate the most torturous places.
