Here we go again:

£18 to buy on ebay. Size 3ftL x 2ftH x1.5ftW.

Think it would need some smaller mesh.

I think something like this would be ok, subject to the mesh being given the thumbs up.

It's covered over and has a door which makes the environment a lot safer for Hammy.

I think the last two ones your posted looks nice. As you were saying, you may need to get some thin wire mesh. Mesh can be thin enough its easily bendable just with your hand, perhaps you could just buy a big piece and fold it over the top and sides? Just trying to help since you say your not a diy person

IF Hammy returns safely then I feel minded to opt for the rabbit run (bottom pic), not only cos it's the cheapest, but also cos it will afford more protection than the others.

If I can get one sharpish my mate Alan will see to the attachment of mesh before he goes back to his new home in Egypt

Never a truer word spoken although as it turned out there was a different reason for the mission/lack of sleep

Jill you do not need any of those pens. A hamster would not and should not spend enough time outside in the sun to merit that expense. They are nocturnal remember. If he climbed up the mesh on the rabbit run then fell off it is quite high and he could damage his back or something else badly. We will let ours freerun on the grass for five minutes or so with us crawling behind them. That is enough. You do not want to let them unsupervised or even lightly supervised in the sun or garden. As long as you are there you can smply take the clear gabber lid and put it on the grass and put him under. The wire on those runs is too wide and he could get through but apart from that they will simply dig underneath so must be supervised every second of out time so you dont need a purpose built pen. He should be asleep while you are sunning yourself As for grass, they will nibble it so only put him on there if you are sure there has been no weedkiller or fertiliser on it. Also watch out for animal excrement and bird droppings which can contain bacteria such as salmonella. I dont think he would find the patio terribly exciting but you could make a play area to climb on clean flower pots etc I guess. Dont spend lots on unnecessary stuff though Jill. I know you want the best for Hammy but from experience you won't need an outdoor pen

Wise words from a knowledgeable lady

It did cross my mind that lazy days in the garden are not best suited to these nocturnal creatures that we love so much...ok if you've got a daytime hammy of course but we haven't. The Great Escape at the dead of night is testimony to that.

Back to the original idea of a patio playground then!

Thanks for the advice.

Great pics...hammies having fun in the sun!

I'll take Hammy out for a tour of my garden when the weather gets warmer.
