Some hamster species have longer tails than others, e.g. Chinese, but even Syrians have ickle ones.

This is a chinese hamster's longer tail. They are prehensile and used for balance and curling round things:

This is a syrian's stubby little tail:

Hamsters tails are important! Not having a tail is immediate disqualification for a hamster at a show. They can also give you a handy bit of skin to see if it's flaky or sore. I've found a ham with a flaky tail who had mites. Certain colours, such as dark grey, are prone to kinked tail. This looks sweet, but can lead to serious spinal deformities in offspring.
This is a kinky tail. Note how it curls up towards the back rather than sticking straight out like the other syrian picture:

winter whites and campbells have little fluffy tails - almost like a mini rabbits tail - they are very cute indeed!

Syrians do have tails as the others have said, but it can be hidden under the fur on a long haired ham!

This thread actually makes me thinking. Is it also for syrians that they use it for balance as well? When Choco is out and he is determined to dig somewhere, his tail just sticks out and when I stroke him it does not feel like it ''wants'' to bend to the stroke of my hand, it just jumps back to the way it was! Also if he is walking slowly and wobbly (like waking up but walking already) his tail goes from left to right and turns and it is so cute.
I never noticed this with my dwarfs though. Maybe their tail is too small?
