Default What is your bedding of choice?

Thought I would do a poll. I've been buying carefresh for a while, as it is very popular where I live. Plus the three options at my local pet store were carefresh, pine, and aspen shavings, I heard pine is bad. It said carefresh was number one in odor control, so that factor alone made me choose it. It is pretty nice stuff, I like it but theres a huge downside. Its about twice as pricey as any other bedding it seems. Would like to switch, once this package is done. So what do you use?

I used to use carefresh but I couldnt STAND the smell. It made the whole cage smell like poop. Unlike the Aspen, which after a while starts to smell like pee, but honestly I enjoy the smell of piss rather than poop... gah.

So I use Aspen. I like to use the white carefresh in the winter though cuz it looks like snow!

i was going to do that! use the white for snow, but i didn't have the money to do it for my ten hamsters...so they've got aspen. i actually like the smell of carefresh and it's very absorbant..granted the care fresh natural is a tad on the ugly side, it works great and nibbles enjoyed sleeping in it. when i first got him i only had him and was buying care fresh colors (blue) and it was beyond gorgeous

Do not use pine or cedar bedding as these are thought to be toxic and the smell from these is too overpowering for a hamster to live on.

Bedding being the substrate on the bottom of the cage? I use Megazorb. Heard it is a bit like Carefresh (or I must be mistaken), but very cheap. It smells nice and keeps the cage very clean! As nesting material my boys all get loads of shredded tissuepaper.

I use the safe bedding from pets at home and cheap as chips toilet paper. She seems to like snuggling up with that.

As for the rest of the cage I just use the pets at home wood shavings.

Anorak, by the 'safe bedding' do you mean the fluffy stuff? As that is often labelled as safe but really and truly is not - its very dangerous in many ways. Best off with toilet paper on its own
